Cold Air Intake+stock aibox=HP??

Does anyone think that if I keep my stock monster airbox and add one of those little cold air intakes to the stock intake elbow, will that give me colder air (extra HP)? or will it restrict air flow?

Mike, cooler denser air will be great, but there are two variables. First, is the air you're drawing cool? If the intakes are getting engine compartment air, it's not going to be cool, more likely it's going to be hot, the exact opposite of what you want. So, if the intake is drawing in fresh, unheated atmosphere, fine. Second, since airflow is very similar to liquid flow, how long, how wide and how straight is the "straw" that your intake is going to be sucking through? Too long, too thin or with too many bends, and again you're going to hurt performance instead of helping.

mike,

If you just want sound, simply cut a few small holes in the bottom of you air filter away from the engine, if you want performance you need to get a finer filter paper filters are to restrictive, on the scale it goes paper is the most, then foam, then mesh, for general purpose i'd go foam its your best bet.

But MTI is right the air flow has to be as direct as possible, and the colder the air the better.

do you have a pic on how exactly this mod should be done?? Is it on the air filter or airbox?? I want to try this mod, but I dont want to interpret these instructions incorrectly.

okay, on your airbox you have the metal lid and the plastic bottom, its pretty easy to go about this modification, and it gives the car a throatier growl.

Basically: -

1. unbolt the metal top half cover of the airbox.
2. unclip the pipe from the rocker cover to the airbox
3. unbolt the plastic bottom half of the airbox (three nuts if you look at the airbox as if it were a clock the nuts are at 3, 7 and between 10 and 11) and pull the air filter off it.
4. simply cut holes where ever you want in the airbox, becareful not to cut them over or to near to the bolt holes, and don't make them to big. I don't think that the airbox requires any major degree of structual integrity, but none the less be careful. Also don't cut holes inside the filter, just around the rim.
5. I believe that if you get a foam air filter instead of the paper one you have you should get better airflow.

good luck with this, the filter sounds heaps better at full throttle, best testing zone is in a tunnel, preferably a narrow low roofed tunnel of car park, press the accelerator to the floor and hear the car suck loads more air. It has a noticable sound increase, but doen't drone like and exhaust, only really comes into effect when you use full throttle.

GOODLUCK
mike
any Q's and i'll see what i can do.

Post Cold air

I Did a Carbon fiber canister system on my W210 Wagon..The Same system should work on the W124 also..Nice gains! Looks Better than the restrictive OE air Box!And Straight flow!
Pics at www.autowerksexpress.com
Bought the filter and fabricated The Rest

BTW I Would NOT Cut/Drill holes in the OE air box since it WILL Pull HOT air In and then you will Lose HP!

Sounds like a cool mod but at the cost of losing HP?Hmmm...

I'm unsure about doing this also. My 300e only has 177HP, and the fact that my car is an 87 means it has lost HP over the years.. I dont want it to get any more less than it is now.

Actually the stock filter flows air quite well. The problem with a K&N is that if its too oily, you will fined it will hurt your MAS which will not be a cheap fix.

you have a few options.

1. Get a green cotton Filter ( I think thats what they are called.) Made by I Think its called ITG...

2. Add a secondary air intake to your stock air housing.

A Member did this to his car and claimed he had better throttle response, but We can't be sure, and the pipe is quite long... But it may help a bit.
http://www.a-p-group.com/ashman/Don/Mercedes_Ram-Air/mercedes_ram-air.html

3. Remove the stock airbox altogether, and adapt a cold air intake form another vehicle, and make sure to use an extra aluminum firewall to seperate it form the rest of the engine compart ment, and then you need ot get air to flow to that part of the engine compartment to allow it to bring in cold air from outside.

do a search on 2phast. He did a mod to his 190E's intake, you may get some ideas form that.
