Replacing 500E oil pan

Hello,
Looks like the previous owner or mechanic over tightened the oil drain plug so there is not a good fit between the drain plug bolt/washer and the oil pan. It leaks unless you get it just right.

I am planning on replacing the oil pan and wanted to know if there is anything to watch out for. Looks like a fairly easy project but if anyone has any words of wisdom I am all ears.

Thanks
Jeff

No Problem

Easy as Pie, Go for it! While you're in there look for signs of timing rail replacement time. There would be pieces(small chips or visible cracks on the rails themselves) of the railings in the pan.

Thanks. I'll look for signs of timing rail wear too.

So, it's basically just the oil pan and the gasket I need, correct? No other special "liquid gaskets" or anything?

Thanks

Sub oil Pan Replacement

If You Replace the Sub(Lower) Oil pan I Would Recommend to replace the Oil level Sending Unit Since its a EASY job with the Sub Oil Pan Off! Its Located on the Pass Side of the Engine block
Bolted to the main bearing cap...the O/rings on the plug leak and Since its apart I Would Do it ..

Is it possible to replace oil level sending unit without removing the oil pan?

No...The Lower (sub) oil pan MUST be removed to replace the oil level Sending unit....With the Lower pan off its a 5min Job
Thats Why I recommended to replace the oil level sensor at the same time...

steel "Carter plate" ?

What is the part #, please, for the steel under-pan referred to as a "Carter plate?"

No USA dealership can tell me; I assume it is a special order item from Germany.

From what I understand, these are common/standard items in Europe. Ineed one, ASAP.

Mark, thanks. I'll go ahead and replace the sending unit as well.

Run, is the Carter Plate the same thing as the lower oil pan? If so, i'll check with my local mb dealer when I go by to get the parts.

Jeff

Jeff

Ja ist das korrekt.

Danke Schoen!

Scott,
Jest checked with a local MB dealer and the part numbers are:
lower oil pan - A 1190101028 - 68.31 euros
gasket - A 1190140822 - 25.98 euros

I was unsuccessful getting my point across for the oil leveling sending unit (my german is not that good!). I'll try another dealer.

Mark,
Do you have a diagram and/or part number (not sure if they would match germany spec model) that shows the oil leveling sending unit so I can show this guy?

Thanks
Jeff

Hi Jeff, Sorry I Cant Upload a Pic from my EPC ...
ALL 119 sensors are the same .
It bolts to the main bearing cap it looks like a cylinder with a wire that has a Plug that goes through the Pass side of the engine block ...then your Engine harness has a connector that plugs into it a round push on connector..Hope this helps

Scott,

I don't think that the lower oil pan is the same thing as the "Steel Carter Protection Plate". But I have been worng before. :D

Let me understand this:

You are looking for stell replacement to the plastic belly pan on the car? If so, then Mercedes recongnizes this as a "Metal Belly Pan" part number 124 520 38 42, cost is $715. They do not have the item listed for the 500E/E500, only the 300E/E320 and 400E.
