Chevy Power Benz

WE TOOK OUR CHEVY 350 POWERED 240D TO A CRUISE IN
TONIGHT FOR ITS FIRST RUN DOWN THE ROAD .
WITH POLISHED ALUMINUM VALVE COVERS WITH MERCEDES
EMBLEMS AND A HUGE POLISHED S SERIES AIR CLEANER
( WITH TWIN SNORKELS ) IT DREW A FEW ODD STARES FROM
THE AMERICAN CAR CROWD - I DON'T THINK MANY OF THEM
RECOGNIZED THE CHEVY ENGINE .
THIS CAR IS SMOOTH AND QUIET - IT TURNS 2400 RPM
AT 75MPH IN 5th GEAR . OH YES , IT HAS A CHEVY TRANSMISSION
TOO . HAS ANYONE ELSE EVER HEARD OF ONE OF THESE
BEING BUILT ?

Yyyyup, I've seen a few 123 cars with Chevy V8s in them.
The nicest one was a 123 coupe. The only thing that gave it away on the outside was a "heartbeat-bowtie" sticker on the back window.

There's also an old guy runnin around town here with a little ford ranger pickup that has a 240D engine and four speed in it.
Talk about dependable and cheap transportation.

Too bad someone has to degrade a Mercedes with a Chevy motor. I am a big anti-motor conversion person. If the motor doesn't say OM616 or 617 on it then it doesn't deserve to be in the engine bay of a D class Mercedes.

Just my opinion

Then you would really hate my 240D W123 Toy-Benz.......at least I can go 0-60 in 6 flat.

RIMSPOKE -
What exhaust manifold did you use?
(that was the headache when I dropped the motor in my car.
had to use the RAM HORNS)

How about some pics?

ALL WILL BE TOLD FOR THOSE WHO ASK

THE DRIVER SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD IS THE TRICKY ONE .
I USED A 1955-56 283 RIGHT SIDE MANIFOLD ON THE LEFT SIDE
IT GOES OVER THE TOP & DUMPS IN BETWEEN #1 AND #3 SPARKPLUGS.
I HAD TO ENLARGE THE PORTS TO ACCOMIDATE THE 350 OPENINGS .
I MADE MY OWN MOTOR MOUNTS AND THAT ONE HAS A BIG "BITE"
TAKEN OUT TO CLEAR THE EXHAUST .
THE EXHAUST WAS MADE ENTIRELY AT HOME USING SECTIONS
OF MANDREL BENT TUBING SLEEVED & WELDED IN SECTIONS .
THE OIL PAN I USED IS ONE USED TO INSTALL THE SMALL BLOCK
ENGINE IN AN S-10 PICKUP . IT SITS SO FAR TO THE REAR THAT
I AM ABLE TO USE THE STEERING DAMPER THAT ATTATCHES TO THE TRACK ROD .
THE ONLY OUTWARD CLUE THAT ANYTHING UNUSUAL IS GOING ON
IS THERE ARE TWO TAILPIPES ON THE REAR MUFFLER INSTEAD OF ONE .
I WOULD LOVE TO POST SOME PICTURES BUT I AM NOT SURE HOW .

Here is a link to another Chevy conversion: http://www.badbenz.com/badbenz/static.html

I thought about the route of the engine conversion but I wanted to see how my SEC would perform with a supercharger. My performance went from 0-60 in 7.2 seconds to 0-60 in 4.7 to 5.0 seconds. I'm running an ATI Procharger P1SC and around 10 psi of boost.

I think the Chevy conversions are cool if properly done!

There is a guy who frequents this site who has installed a GM 4.3 liter V6 in his W123 chassis car.

That 123 on that BadBenz website....that was awesome! Like it or not, you have to admire that installation. That is clean! That isn't any botch job, just a perfect clean install. I can't wait to see someone install a Corvette LS1 with a BW T56 in one. They make a crate LS1 with a stand alone computer...all ya gotta do is run six wires, that's all. Better yet...a crate LS6.

For you people intersted in V8 transplants, might want to check the link below.

http://www.torquecentral.com/index.php?

I would feel a bit funny swapping my M119 twin cam V-8 for a pushrod. It would definitely change the "vibe" of the car. But...I'd LOVE to have the low end torque and improved fuel economy. I'd go LS1 or LS6 and besides, the GM transmissions shift much more quickly and smoothly than out old MBZ trannies.

Exclamation way to go! Build YOUR car the way YOU like it

I was just curious, How does the Mercedes rear end handle all the torque? Also, it seems that the rear ends on these cars are geared (to the extreme) towards highway driving. Did you have to change any of the gearing in your transmission to compensate for this?

Take it easy

MY TRANSMISSION

MY TRANNY IS A BORG WARNER T-5 5 SPEED .
IT HAS THE SAME TOP GEAR RATIO AS THE T-56 BUT AT HALF THE
PRICE , WITH ONE GEAR FEWER .
THIS TRANNY IS NORMALLY TILTED TOWARD THE DRIVER
BUT THIS GAVE CLEARENCE PROBLEMS .
I USED AN OLDER BELLHOUSING AND PLUMBED IN A
HYDRAULIC THROWOUT BEARING SO THERE IS NO
EXTERNEL SLAVE CYLINDER .
THE REAR END IS THE STOCK 3.69 240D UNIT .
I HAVE A TURBO FLEX DISC AND A MODIFIED EL CAMINO
DRIVESHAFT .
DRIVING THE CAR ON THE HIGHWAY IS GREAT IN 5th GEAR .
THE MOTOR TURNS JUST 1750 RPM AT 60 MPH .
SINCE THESE MOTORS MAKE A LOT OF POWER AT SLOWER
SPEEDS , THE 5 SPEED MAKES A LOT OF SENCE .
THE CAR HAD A 4 SPEED ORIGONALLY .
I WILL SEND PICTURES TO AMYONE WHO WRITES ME AT :

Is this T5 out of a Camaro or an S10? I would hope the camaro because the S10's were only rated at 200lb.ft. torque. The Camaros were rated higher but I don't think that high.
