is 26k to much for a 500e with 66k miles? it has low mileage for a 92, and this car might be a collector's car in the future with only 66k on it , right?

sorry, the crystal ball is out of whack . . .

The 500E already has enthusiast collector appeal, but it still hasn't gotten to the point where it's being accquired at above it's original sales price, like the original Datsun 240Z, Big Healy, etc. If E-Bay listings are any measure, you can see that there's not that many 500E fans or Trekkers ready to jump in at the $27K mark.

I'll go out on a limb here. I've been thinking about this a lot lately since I was considering selling my E420 for an E500.

If you look at the MB models that are 'collector' cars you will see that the only sedan that has reached that status has been the 600 limo. All of the others have been convertibles: 190SL, 280SE 3.5 Conv., 280SL......maybe the 560SL.

I think the 300SEL 6.3 and the 6.9 are collectible, but will never make collector status.

Anyone???

Craig

You'd be suprised. My friends dad had like 3 or 4 gullwings in the late 70s when no one cared about them. He kept one though, and he sold it in the early 90s for about 250k.

6.9 and 6.3 might suprise you. They are definately cool cars.

500E is too popular now to be collectable, they are going to ride a wave down to about 12k maybe 10k, then back up after 1995 E500 goes down to those prices, then I think they will come back up. As of right now they are too popular.

1993-1995 E320 cabriolet will definatley be collectable, in my opinion.

True, but I think the gullwing was built on the 300SL frame.....and the E320 cabriolet is a convertible, like I said before.

The Gullwing 300SL was built around a tubular space frame, which required the unique gullwing doors and the high entry sill.

I think it's too early to say the 500E/E500 is or isn't a collectable. If you look at the vast majority of collectable cars they are usually at least 20 - 30 years old. A few exceptions are the extremely rare Ferrari's, Lambo's, Mclaren and other exotics. I think it meets the future collectable requirements considering it's performance, build quality, rarity and heritage.

Personally if I was still in the market for a 500 and the car was in excellent mechanical and physical condition I would jump at this car even at $30K. Many might think I'm crazy but IMHO good 500's are hard to come by and finding one with Shatners name on the title definitely makes it more attractive. :p

I'm with Afshin. Shatner's car is most likely VERY well taken care of. Money was probably not an issue - anything not perfect, it went to the dealer & was fixed. It has low miles and appears to be nearly flawless. The price is not bad, IMO. If I was in the market for a 500E I would also jump at this one (besides, I *am* a Trekkie!). Note it has a K40 system as well. Only downside, IMO, is that it has the small front brakes (unless he upgraded them, which I doubt) - oh well. Now if this were a 1994 E500 at that price, I'd probably be making irrational phone calls to my loan officer & insurance agents right now!

Well, it sold. **sniff** Sure wish I had ~$25k to drop on a 500E. The teal '94 ending today looks bee-yooootiful, mmmm..... :p
