I could be a little rusty, but isn't that airbox from a 92-93 500E.

Shanta ... it does appear to be of the 92 - 93 vintage air box ... as we discovered at Morro Bay, the 94s did not have any markings (silver paint) on the Mercedes text or the Star.

Scott ... if this truely is a 94 engine, can it be enlarged to 6.0L or 6.5L? Open deck block, yes?

But if it is a 92 -93 closed deck block ... hushsssssss, don't tell any one.:p

If it is open-deck, it will raise the price tag by about $15K.

Unhappy WHY is all the good stuff on the other coast?

Never fails, it is always over there and not in the East. Neil, would you pack this into your moving van for me when you come to NC??
Saw this a couple of weeks ago on Ebay so it is being run through again so there must be a reason!! Watch out...

Thanks,

There are a couple on www.car-parts.com, one of them is a closed deck block.

When it was first listed (more than a few weeks ago, I think it was something like 3 months when I saw it), I e-mailed the seller and asked a few questions. Hey, a spare low-mile 500E mill at a bargain price?

What came back were particulars that were inconsistent with the description in the listing, and I instantly got a very uneasy feeling. Can't recall precisely what they said, but if things like model year and mileage are quoted differently between the ad and the e-mail, well, that's either sloppy, or dishonest, and both are bad.

This may be a perfectly good unit, but caveat emptor.

Bri,

I think both the closed deck and open deck designs are both quite robust, in stock trim. However, if you want to increase its capacity, the closed deck block is easier to work with, and stronger. The open deck design requires that a metal plate be fabricated & installed that would strengthen the top of the block, but that's all academic unless you're gonna pop for a 6.5 conversion.

Also, the open deck blocks were much more economical for MBZ to produce - as I understand, LOTS of closed deck blocks got thrown away because the yfailed to meet tolerances (or some such)

FWIW
