My V8 Coffee Table / Wine Rack...

Yeah I know, it's not a Benz engine, but I thought I'd share it with you good folk anyway...

Just put it on eBay. Scared now!...

Pretty cool. Range Rover engine, I bet thats pretty cheap in your area.

Does it have a gasket on the bottom of the block to prevent scratching.

Yeah, the damn things are everywhere (found another one in hedge a few months ago) - but we have to pay a fortune for a chevy small block! Based on the buick ally lump, I think?

It has felt pads to stop the floor being scratched.

A good range rover block and tranny cost more than the car is worth. 1991 195,000 miles is worth about 4000USD, engine and tranny about 5000USD

It is based upon the buick 218

Ah, a 218 - cheers for that. Good strong engine though.

I can't believe they are worth so much over there! Remind me to bring a suitcase full of them with me next time I visit the states!

I can get a good rover engine and box (auto or manual) for probably 250 pounds - about 400USD

But a rusty old Mustang or Blazer suitable only for spares would be around the 1000 pound mark - about 1300USD. And that's only if you are lucky enough to find one!

On saying that, I am just about to go and pick up a complete set of running gear (everything from the engine to the driveshafts) from an '87 500SE Benz for 200 pounds - $300. The trouble is that they put loads of salt on our roads in the winter to stop them icing over, so all our cars rust out really quickly. The SE had a completely rusted chassis, but perfect running gear - hence the motor not being worth anything.

I then need to find a giant shoehorn to haul it into my w123 230ce. Should be an interesting little project!

There's a company that does (or did) this with Porsche 928 engines. Name escapes me now...

my friend has a 560 euro engine in his 240D, and a 500 euro block in his 300TD wagon.

Man, see what an ocean does to you....

Perhaps you should consider a flat boxer engine so that the corks on the wine bottles don't dry out!

It's a good point, but there would be obviously only be room for 6 bottles, which means that I would have to drink the other two rather fast

I've been asked to do a table with a VW flat 4. Thought it would look good to have the fan housing coming up though the middle of the glass...

So True, so true

It works the other way most of the time though. Things are so expensive here that cost a fraction in the states.

One day I will live on your side of the pond!

Perhaps a Ferrari boxer block, but then again the cylinders would be so skinny, you'd probably only be able to store a dozen Canadian Ice Wine.
