That's my brother's car - he's looking to move it since he's buying some land to build on.

The car's mint - and gets up & goes pretty good too ;-)

I'm certain...

...that he won't (and shouldn't) take less than $50K for it!!!

I can understand the preceived value but the chances of someone paying 50k for a 93 500E (mods or not) is going to be pretty slim.

$50K for a rare, potent, desirable, originally $160K car?

Sounds fair to me...

Why would someone pay $50,000 for an E600 when you can get a used E55 with a Kleeman blower intalled for less than $45000 and it would wax that E600 all over the place in every respect.

1) because a 600E/E600 is more collectible
2) because he/she can

Because they want it...almost every car has a following of dedicated enthusiasts who understand that performance numbers are just that...numbers. Perceived value, rarity, emotional attachment and history make up the difference...whether logical or not.

How is it collectable? It is not a manufactured automobile. It has been done by a tuner that is still in business and would still do the conversion if you paid them to do the work. Now, if AMG had done the work it would be a collectable. Nah, nothing more than a tuner car. Not going to go for much over $30,000 if it even reaches that much. There is just not much value in it. Granted, I think the car is nice but I don't think there is a market for the price of $50,000, $40,000, or maybe even $30,000.

Because there is some sucker out there with $50K that is dumb enough to. Sure its a RennTech, but the $35K is the most I'd pay for it. Sure it has 440HP, but 73,000 miles!!! you cant tell me that that trans is not on its way out. A car with that much power has definetly had its share of stop light races.

Anything is collectible to the affected demographic/audience/following.

A complete (SL600 spec) tranny rebuild is less than $3000 - dinner at a nice San Francisco restaurant for 5-10 people.

I must interject, here, that I don't think the majority of 500E/E500/600E/E600 owners/prospective buyers are hurting, financially.

In closing, I pose this question (facetiously): why would someone spend more than $100K on a car, knowing that 99.999% of all automobiles only depreciate in value?

Life is too short: go for broke (literally) - you can't take it with you (to my knowledge)!!!

Because there is either real value or perceived value at the time. It boils down to marketing: product, price, promotion, and placement.

At the time, this was probably the biggest baddest thing going, now it is mearly a 10 year old Mercedes that has probably been thrashed to death. I would drive the wheels off if I spent that much money on the car. The car has seen its days and now the depreciation will eat the car.
