I don't have a used E500 motor but please tell us what happened on Ebay. Maybe your knowledge will help your fellow Mercedes owners to avoid getting screwed.

How about a 400E ?

Aren't they the same block. I don't know for sure, but think that at the block level, they may be interchangable.

Is the block bad? Could it be rebuilt by Brabus/RennTech or other reputable shop?

I hope things work out....some people have no sense of fairness.

Best of luck.

i have actually purchased 5 vehicles on ebay and have been happy with all of them except for this one and according to the seller he didnt know anything about a crack in the block etc. anyways as long as their feedback is good and they dont have too many negatives you should be fine ..the problem is im in california so any kinda deal i will ever get will be outside the state so if i have peoblems ,unless i dont have a life its usually not woth following legal action!!!

Most states have some type of frauds or lemon laws.
I would place a call to the seller's local motor vehicle department and see if a claim can be made.
Was the seller a used car dealership or just an individual?

Greetings-

you can PM 'ERASE' from this board....he may be able to point you to the wrecking yard that bought his very low mile '94 E500 (totalled ~1 year ago)

I believe the car was back East (U.S.).

Sorry to hear of the cracked block ...it's the first I've heard of such a malady on an E500.

best regards and let us know what turns out....sometimes those 'as-is'/ 'no representations or warranty' deals are not as great of a bargain as it appears..

Depending on the state, you may be able to break the contract.
I believe Texas has a 72 hour window.

Is the block on the E500 different from the M119 V-8 block?

There is a 500E engine on www.car-parts.com (search for a 1992-1994 Mercedes 500), it is a 1992, but it will fit your car. You could either install the 1992 engine, and sell the good parts from yours.

Or take the block from yours and switch the heads and stuff (I am pretty sure they are interchangeable even with the different block design).

PS I want your cracked block.

That's why I said check for a whole engine, the bits you don't use you can sell separately.

thank you

i just wanted to thank everyone that has helped me in this matter ..im still looking for one as no one is willing to sell just the block and it looks like i might have to just go with a new block instead of a whole used engine that may or may not bring the same problem (and a used engin costs almost as much as a new block)...if anyone can tell me if any other block might fit for sure i would appreciate it

Any M119 5.0 liter, "500" block should work...500SL, SL500, 500SEL, S500, etc. Late 1993 and later blocks are open-deck, 1990 - early 1993 are closed-deck...but either should bolt-in. [Techs, please correct me if I'm wrong.]
