124 / 500E firm suspension rattle over expansion joints

Our 1993 W124 500E has approx. 89K miles on a stock suspension and stock wheels sizes properly inflated.

Two years ago I replaced the front struts.

I've noticed that while going over expansion joints & small pot-holes, the rear suspension seem REALLy stiff with body rattles.

I replaced the accummulators, flushed the system, and verified the rear-struts still work .

While replacing the accummulators has lessened the stiffness, I still hear rattles/thumbs on big potholes.

What else could it be?

At 89K miles, should I under General Principle (GP) replace all links, rear subframe bushings, and the differential bushings?

Thanks,
:-) neil

Neil

I notice the EXACT same behavior on my (heavily modified) 1993 500E, DAILY (on the Bay Bridge)!!!

While I have not yet replaced my (original) accumulators, I am contemplating it.

I will do so when I buy/install some E60 AMG rear hydromatic struts.

Hey Neil. its the struts, even though they may dampen. They form rust where it bolts into the lower control are. Its like a ball socket that moves freely. After yrs, they become dry, there self lube with the teflon seal to keep the lubricant in,well when it wears out it becomes noisy as hell. This I know from experiementing with my 500E. I put like 3 sound sensors and drove my car for a while. pin pointed right to that exact spot. With the noise tester you can isolate the areas you want to listen for.

So, does this mean struts need to be replaced entirely, or can the bushings be replaced?

I had the same problem on my 92 500E. Ended up replacing the struts...One was bad (siezed) but both suffered from bad links.

Rear strut seized? How was that tested? Mine goes up & down when I activate the self-levelling valve.

Well, I've driven in a 1984 Corvette, which is the first year of that body style, and it was one of the stiffest, teeth rattling, bone jarring rides I have ever had the displeasure to experience.

Rode like it had no suspension - I've driven race cars with more compliance

Neil, sounds like it's terminal. You'd better let me take Barney off your hands for wholesale... I'll be doing you a favor in the long run... (j/k!)
