fire extinguisher

I recently had cause to remove the drivers seat from my 1993 500E to try and establish where to install a fire extinguisher. I located a harness for a factory fitted telephone, cut the 8 wire bundle, clipped and stowed it. Now I note that after I have reinstalled the seat, I do not get the SRS self test on the dashboard lights. Does the factory fitted telephone have anything to do with the SRS system ? Surely not . . . ?

Hi Andy...having run across that same problem this summer when I swapped out a pair of Recaros, I found I'd forgotten to reconnect a small red plug that runs from the seatbelt latch out the bottom front of the seat and into the floor at the top left corner. Hope that helps!

thanks Dean, first thing I always do is disconnect the battery and then disconnect all the plugs. I know the one you mean, it is a twin wire plug with a red shell and I noted another the same but with a black connector shell. I have been over them 3 or 4 times and can only guess I have disturbed something else. Reason for removing the seat in the first place was to see how the fire extinguisher fits as I heard it attaches to the seat frame. I looked at a friend's SL500 and his uses a bracket which fits with bolts to the chassis crossmember at the forward seat mounts. Trouble with the parts catalogue and the search function here is that there appears to be several types of fitting available, all for the W124 . . Cheers !

Andy,

Is your fire extinguisher mount a factory part? If so, did you recently buy it through a MB dealership and could you post the part number? I've checked with a few parts suppliers here in the States and they weren't able to locate a factory mount for the E500. Thanks.

Jim

There's another thread that's more extensive on the factory extinguisher with images and drawings. I had researched thru. my dealership and they went so far as to contact Germany, but could not order. I'd be very interested in knowing how you came across the parts and whether you'd be willing to order more and ship to US.

For Euro parts that USA dealers refuse to order (they can, no matter what they say, it's just a hassle for them so they don't)... contact these guys in Germany. They take credit card and ship to the USA, and their prices are fantastic - near US wholesale price even after shipping (except big stuff, of course).

To check Euro price & availability, use this URL. Note that you need the alpha prefix before the part number. For tools, add a "W" before the 12-digit part number:

Jim

The fire extinguisher I have is Part # MA000 860 22 80, the covering MA129 868 10 39 and the bracket MA129 860 01 14, these were from the dealers here. What throws me a bit is that the numbers start with MA129 and are presumably for a 129 chassis (500SL ?). My dealer is looking into the correct installation as the bracket I have is for holding the extinguisher only and I need the steel one that holds the extinguisher and holder to the front crossmember. The photos on Ricardo's site don't really show the method of mounting too clearly. When the dealer has an answer for me, I will post the part numbers for my installation. For shipping stuff from germany, you might want to contact Andreas Reinacher, he is at info@dbdepot.de, he is a really helpful guy and will ship at the best rates for you, we have used him here plenty of times.

The 129 number is correct...those parts are used on 201s and 124s also. Seat doesn't need to be removed for the bracket install either...put it all the way forward and tilt the back down....2 pre-drilled holes are already on the seat bottom...2 small screws are all that hold it on. Use a shorty screw driver.

Hope I never, ever have to use the fire extinguisher though !!

Thanks for the info Andy. The 129 part numbers don't surprise me since, as Jim pointed out, the part was used across different platforms. I ran across the same situation with the rear control arms on my 190E (W201) where they had W124 part numbers. Thanks for keeping us posted when your dealer provides more info.

Thanks guys. The parts dealer was really helpful and patient with me on this as we tried to sort out the correct items. Jim, I saw the 2 holes you mention, two about 6" apart and about 3mm in diamater drilled on the bottom of the forward frame. This sure answers a lot. I now just need to source the part number of the bracket that screws to these two holes and the extinguisher holder, many thanks again . . .

Those be it Andy, really any small sheet metal screw can work under there...these are the part numbers I have for my 500Es set-up if it helps you.

metal bracket 201 686 0412
2 screws for bracket 000000 000453
bucket for extinguisher 124 860 0014
extinguisher 000 860 2280
felt cover (colors vary) 129 868 1039 8F04
2 clips for cover 001 997 8686
2 screws for bucket 007983 004333
2 washers for bucket 000127 004203
2 screw clips for bucket 001 994 2845

If you have a fax number I can send the parts diagram of all the stuff too. Note that the bracket has a 201 number..its the same for the 124s and 129s; I'm pretty sure.
