Donny,
If you can't tell how much power the AMG muffler gave you then it probably didn' give you very much... What are you really looking for as far as performance upgrades? Do you want more handling? Sportier appearance? Acceleration? With most of these the axiom of "how fast do you want to go = how much do you want to spend?" applies. Especially with Renntech.
For handling, you get the best "bang for the buck" with wheels and tires. After that try some lowering springs. (Eibach or H&R will do) When you lower it might not be a bad idea to put some sportier shocks on as well. Remember though, that AMG did not do much in the way of suspension work on the E55. They pretty much just did 18" wheels and tires. The mods they did to the rest of the suspension were very slight.
If it is power your after then you get the best "bang for the buck" with software tuning. (aka "chips") Most tuners have chips for the M119 4.2 V8. Among non-tuners you could try Superchips. IF Autothority does do chips for MB then I would highly recommend them but the jury is still out on whether the public can get anything from them. Beyond a chip or perhaps a smoother flowing airbox the mods get VERY expensive. A stage 3 Renntech 6.0 engine will run you $50K just for engine work alone. The engine will give you close to 450HP but for that amount it should! By the time you upgrade the rest of the vehicle to match the gonzo engine you are talking almost twice that. Brabus, AMG, or other tuners will cost about the same.
Things like mufflers, air dams, spoilers, badges, only add bark-not bite. They can dress up a car cosmetically but don't count on much in the way of actual performance gains from them. If they make you feel better then you may of helped the most important performace aspect of any car; the driver.
Happy Motoring...Lee
