Question Fitting LSD on 1997 MB is it possible..?

Hi,

I got some question that some of you expert maybe able to answer.

I am interested in putting LSD (maybe Quaife differential) on my 1997 C36.

How intensie the labor is..?
And since Quaife is big on BMW not on MB, do you think it would be a big deal to get them make one for MB application..?

Also to those who put LSD on their MB, what brand are they and what is the unit cost, labor, etc..?? I am interested to know

TIA.

Regardz,

Doing it at the moment...

I have a 400E and am replacing the differential to a better gear ratio but also wanted a limited slip diff while in there. So I found a used 500SL diff and took the carrier assembly out and have sent it off to be converted to a limited slip by a company that does this. They have never done a MB diff and mine is their first which I should be getting back shortly. The price is very reasonable considering what RennTech and Quaife units cost, the only drawback being the downtime. I'll have a spare diff/carrier to send out for another buildup but it will be for a nonASR car.
Can not pin down a firm price until all is completed and tested.

I am also in the Charlotte area. Any others on the forum that you know of from the area?

Probably not all...

I know of two off the top of my head, one with a 500E and the other with a C43. There may be others that I've not run across as I don't follow all forums and many don't fill in their location when they register. I've not tried to get a list by location so don't know if this is possible. It would be handy whenever a GTG is being formed to notify members in the area.
Myself, I'm actually in the Matthews area....where are you?

Intersting subject.

I once asked on this board why 560 SEL's came with limited slip differentials, and not the ultimate performance sedan- the 500E.

The answer: ASR, and I believe your car has ASR and / or ESP, which would make LSD redundant.

Toby- what ratio are you going to use for your 400E? 3.27, 3.46, 3.07 ?

The 500SL R&P

Neil,
Planning to use the 2.65 from the 500SL as this is an every day driver and with the 225/45/17 tires I'll be within 3% of a stock 500E ratio wise. I may find later that going a little lower is an alternative but will wait until then.
One MB toy is enough with the attention, time and $$ I put into it!
Found out today the VIR Audi event is filled up in the upper two groups but there is space in the two bottom groups. Going up for three days of asphalt scrubbing fun!!!

Toby- let me know how you like it. I'd like to add limited-slip to a 2.87, 3.07, and 3.27 diff.
