Euro 1983 280CE

All,
Does anyone know if the euro 280ce has any more horsepower than the US version. Also, is there any mods that can be performed such as: manual trans refit, turbocharge or supercharger, other horsepower increasers? Your help is appreciated.

DieselNation:

A euro M110 2.8L had 185hp from the factory, depending on year. The US M110 had about 140hp. This is somewhat misleading however because when the car was greymarket'd over here, some smog emissions were installed so you will find that it has something less than the original 185hp and something more than the 140hp of the US model.

You can swap the trans, however I can think of no real large performance gains can be had from this motor, ie turbos or superchargers. If you want a lotta power from a w123 chassis, I would almost suggest a M117 5.0 conversion, like the AMGs of old.

280CE manual trans

Does anyone know where to get a complete manual trans setup(pedals, trans, bell housing, etc.) for a 1983 280 CE (non US)?

I'm always surprised that these older sixes (code?) were 4 valves per cylinder.

What were multivalve engines like back then without so much electronic control? Not very torquey? Did they fall 'off the cams'? 185bhp is quite a bit from 2.8 litres in 1983.

Why did they move to 2 valves/cyl in the M103 3.0 engine in the 1985 W124 E-class? Noise? Reliability?

I would put in a 500 euro motor, a lot of the engine wiring is the same, and you could probably get about 250+ hp.
