Hi, For years I always had some thoughts on mind.
After hearing advises and valuable suggetsions, such as install 500SL sway bar, and 500E alignment really had made me wondering if those thoughts are possible. First, would the MB Krompresser in the SLK 230 or those turbo in Turbo diseal models fit in to other Mercedes ? If so, would that consider to be some good alternative ways to gain performance ? Instead of those after market products(cheaper and more reliable ?) Secondlly ,high-end performace MB's, such as the SL's intake mainflow, throttle body or other parts. I wonder if they interchageable to other Model? Don't really know if such thoughts are possible. Any concerns would help. Thank you, your concerns is greatly appericated. Peter regards 93 300E 3.2 |

The engines between the E's and SL's are pretty much the same per model year. Therefore you would gain no performance swapping an SL engine for an E engine. (or parts thereof) The "kompressor" still needs lots of support hardware, internal modifications, and computer/electronic work. Mercedes actually outsources the supercharger on the SLK. Its not like Mercedes just left a spot on top there to bolt the blower onto all their engines. In fact, with most W124's forced induction is not an option. As complex as these cars are, any change you make requires lots of engineering to do without nasty side effects. Example: your (now) supercharged engine's management system reads ungodly high intake pressures because it believes it is still naturally aspirated. It will throw warning codes or take timing out or generally be fussy.
When we mentioned 500E align specs, or a swap of suspension parts that is far more "doable" with the parts onhand than something like a turbo or supercharger. An aftermarket kit (of high quality) will provide all the parts necessary (hence the term kit) and someone else has solved most of the engineering headaches for you. Engine swaps are not really practical. It is much easier to simply clean up your current car and buy the next level. Note: even with all the technical expertise I had access to I opted to buy a 500E to replace the 400E. If you want to avoid the "aftermarket" and use only MB parts you would be much better off to trade your 300E for a C36, 400E, 500E, or 500SL. All MB models can be tuned to some degree but after a point it just makes more sense to start with a different car. A set of 16x7.5 rims with 225/50/16 rubber, a performance E-Prom, a K&N filter, set of H&R or Eibach springs with Bilstein shocks is about as far as you can go before it makes more sense to buy the next level. As I joked in an earlier post "I could take a 190E 2.6 manual 5-speed, have it stroked out to 3.6 liters, put a twin-turbo kit on it, total suspension rework, etc and have one helluva monster. Of course, I could just go for a drive in the 500E and have about the same thing." The out of pocket cost would be about the same, but the 190 creation would never be resellable while the 500E is the most collectable MB from the 80's or early 90's. It all depends. What are your priorities in a tuning program? In your car as a whole? We'd love to help but we need to know what you are looking for. Hope this helps...Lee |
