Well this is back in 1966, I was in the Navy stationed in San Diego,ca.
once in a while I saved up enough money to fly home for the weekend,
we had to fly to San francisco back in those days before san Jose opened
up. I cost $18 or $19 back then for air fare.
one of the guys on the ship would fly up once in a while, and this one weekend he spots a 64 GTO on a lot for $2250.00. he keeps it at my parents for safe keeping. when he had 3 mo and I had 2 months left in the navy, we take off for his home in Thibodaux, La. we drive to St. Louis,
Mo then take hwy 61 south. well Iam driving and Frenchy sleeping away,
I keep taking the GTO higher and higher. this is wide open hwy, wide median, nobody around. sudenly there is a red light blinding me, guy pulls
me over for doing 100 mph. looks just like Jackie Gleason in smoky and the bandit. he says "you boys is under arrest" takes our license and says "follow me" we cut through the grassy median and go down to this little
town of Osceola, Arkansas. log us in this big book, and says we can sit
is jail for 2 wks and wait for the judge to come to town for our trial,
pay our bail, and come back, or don`t come back and forfit bail. It was
only $34.50. we were outa there. it was scarry, thought we would never
see daylight again.
The guy had a 64 Ford, how he cought up to that GTO is a mystory.
I did take the 85 300D up to 100 this past march on our trip to Fort Worth
Texas. was on hwy 40 between Barstow and Needles, Ca. have had this
ticking that comes and goes, like a hydraulic valve lifter. I know we don`t
have those in the 617. haven`t been able to figgure it out. so I decide to
blow out the cob webs. man did it run smooth. did run better after that.
(for a while)
Charlie

Last roadtrip I cruised 95-110 mph most the way.
I am very sensible and let my car drift down to 70-75
for passing of other vehicles. I aim for around 5mph over their speed at time of pass.

Simply because it annoys me when a car whips past me
at superspeed- so I don't do it to others. I don't whip around thru
heavy traffic, I just stay in the flow and try not to hit my brakes during rush hour... You know you can erase traffic jams that way? If you leave enough room to coast while the people ahead of you are braking and starting up again, you dont hit your brakes, and neither does anyone behind you.

I have never received a speeding ticket.
Almost had one, but got out of it.
Was pulled over for coasting past an smalltown indiana cop at 31 in a 30.
He said I had not "respected his presence".
He asked me if I had any drugs in the car and I actually asked him
"What do you need?" (I'd been saving that one for years, forgot the comedian I originally heard it from, maybe bill hicks...)

He stared at me for about 3 seconds and I knew I'd better say...
"Sorry, Im a bit of a smartass."
"We're going to get the dogs"
"Good, I like dogs."
"You wont like these dogs"
"Why? You beat them when you train them?"
That was the end of the conversation.
The cop and his partnercop went to their car for 5 minutes and than returned my license without a word and left.

I love driving.

105.41mph in a 55. I remember staring at the radar readout from the back seat of the Crown Vic. Yalobusha County MS. For those of you who don't know where that is, there was a movie called Walking Tall years ago about a good ol' boy Joe Don Baker. I was a punk about 19 years old in a Honda Civic 3door Si 5 Spd. just passing through on my way to Memphis. John Law had just backed into his spot when a blew by him. Took him 4 miles to get me and bubba was big and mad when he got there. For reasons I'd rather not go into, things went from bad to worse. Dry county, beer in car, concealed weapon, yadi yadi. He cuffed and stuffed me and drove me around down some dirt roads in the middle of no where. I thought I was going to get roughed up a bit. After 45 minutes we arrived at the jail where as I walked in a saw a sign that said "no bail after 10pm". He drove me around so that I would have to stay the night! I was incarcerated in Water Valley MS. pop. 630. I already had phoned my dad the first time I was in trouble and he had always told me "I'll help the first time but don't call me on the second"...so I called my older sister who wired bail money the next morning and my girl friend in Memphis had to come bail me out. Her parents were soooo proud. Well, 20 years later and I am still married to her and the Lord has changed my life. Never had another brush with the law (except for other minor tickets). Went to get my concealed handgun license and lo and behold, I had to dig up all that dirt on the application...only to find that the judge never recorded the incident. They literally had to create the charges on an old page out of their book from that year so I could send it to the FBI....hilarious. I should have known in such a small town when my lawyer said he had played high school football with the judge.....

Since we're talking near misses and get aways..

Triumph Daytona 955i (K&N, ECU reprograme, custom underseat titanium exhaust, Galfer wave rotors) 170+. Don't know what the speed limit was, I'm guessing 55 on a back country road out past Katy Texas (FM 1093 I believe). I quit looking down as I passed 170 on the speedo. Here is what is funny. Riding with a buddy and we're both flying. Suddenly as we notice we're coming up(far off) to an intersection, I decide I'm going to play Miguel Duhamel and sit up out of the slip stream to help slow the bike down like a superbike racer. Note to self: make sure you have a REAL TIGHT grip on the bars before trying that one again. Nearly came off the bike from the wind blast. My butt was half way up on the rear cowl and I was hanging on by my finger tips. It's official. 170+ is fast on two wheeels and I was sufficiently scared after almost falling off the back of the bike. My buddy busted me later when my wife overheard him talking to me about how fast we'd been going. Got the guilt trip when my first child was born...I miss my bike.

Scare the wife episode: 1995 Black Impala SS with much goodies working under the hood and some massive 315/35s in the back with a sweet Borla exhaust. (Thank you Motorsports Tech in Houston!) Just picked the car up from the shop in Houston and was living in AR at the time. Headed out between Little Rock and Memphis on I-40. Had my hand over the electroinic speedo and was asking my wife how fast she thought we were going. To which she replied: 90. Remove the hand and, presto! 163. At which time she started hitting me in the shoulder while screaming at me. So I see two semis waaaay ahead riding side by side (4 lane divided highway and no where to go) So I think.."just get off the throttle and I'll coast up behind them". They came up pretty quick at that speed and I had to get on the binders pretty hard. Just as we topped the next overpass, there was Arkansas Highway Patrol, but I was already back down to 70 in a 70!

Get of out ticket episode: Same black SS. Arkansas highway patrol clocks me at 92 in a 55 going the other way. Cuts through the grassy median and pulls me over. Asks me
"do you know how fast you were going?"
No Sir, I wasn't really paying attention I was talking on the phone.
Officer:"92"
Really?! This car doesn't always feel like it's going fast if I'm not paying attention.
Officer (who was driving an LT-1 Caprice) "Yeah I know, my car has the same engine and it's pretty fast".
No offense, officer, but you couldn't keep up with this one.
Officer: "Really?"
I proceeded to pop the hood and describe all the goodies.

Wrote me a warning for 70 in a 55 and let me go!

One last one (I'm older now, so there are more of these old stories to go around) I had a beat up looking 78 Nova with red oxide primer on it that I used to use on the weekend to earn some money (if you know what I mean). Looked ugly but was an ABSOLUTE BEAST (at least 0-115mph, which was all the top end it had with low gears in the back). 355 small block with all the goodies, 4:11 gears and 3inch flowmasters. The great part was it weighed in about 2750 pounds after I finished with it. (that was the first time I realized that lower weight was better and cheaper than more horsepower) So I am headed home at 2am after a little Saturday night stop light work and get to the underpass of 59S at Newcastle. As I turn under the overpass there was no one around, so I lit 'em up for about 100 feet at about 7500 rpm. 2 chamber flowmasters sound really good with the echo of the underpass! I look in the rearview mirror and through the massive cloud of tire smoke I see red and blues. I coast over to the gas station at the other side of the intersection and the officer comes up to the car and asks" Son, was there any particular reason for that?" No, sir. You know how it is. Sometimes you just get an attitude. He replys : Yeah, I know. Take that thing home and put it away before you get in trouble. Not even a warning!

In Ontario, you do not want to get caught doing 50km/h over the speed limit. New street racing law will result in minimum $2,000 up to $10,000 fine, immediate 7-day license suspension and 7-day vehicle impound ($1,000 for towing and storage), possible jail time.

The most common age of offenders has been 21, the average age is 30. About 13 of the drivers were 65 or older (including an 85-yr old), and 41 were 17 or younger. Almost 84 per cent were male and 16 per cent were female. Total of 1,300 drivers caught in a month from when the law took effect in Sept.30/07 up to Nov.7/07.

Wrong answer....

"because you are the best officer in the world!"

My ticket was nothing either, I was going 40, thinking it's 35, and I was safe, but the limit was actually 30, and the cop said I didnt stop long enough at the stop sign, but let me off on that one.

In my first mercedes, an 86 560 sel, I raced my buddies monte carlo and noticed that i was at 120. First time at 100+.

In my second mercedes, an 86 300e, we could barely hit 110, but with an exhaust going down the ****hole, man did it sound mean!

In my current and third mercedes(this has only been like 2 years!), a 97 e320, we got going to 155 and the car wouldn't go any faster. We absolutely obilterated my buddies 02 Mustang GT. He got around 110 and leveled out, but my car just kept going faster and faster.
