Hope this helps
Just did the FPR last weekend. Quite easy, just be careful with the fuel in the fuel rail. The fuel rail contains quite a large amount of fuel under pressure. You need to bleed it down prior to removing the regulator.
Remove the air box. Bleed the fuel rail pressure from the schrader valve towards the front of the rail ('93 500e). The fuel will spray out when the schrader is pressed so be prepared with safety glasses, a rag, and fire extinguisher. Note: When the regulator is removed fuel will flow out of the rail (gravity fed, low pressure). You need to have the new regulator ready to install and a rag to catch any spillage. To remove the regulator remove the vacuum line and snap-ring around its perimiter. Clean the area on top of the old regulor so no nasties get into the rail. The regulator may now be pulled out of the rail. Place the new regulator in position and press until it is seated. Replace the snap-ring and the vacuum line. Check that the schrader valve is capped. Cycle the ignition (don't start it) a few times to build fuel pressure. Run your fingers around the regulator and the schrader valve to check for wettness. If there are no leaks start the car and check again. Replace the airbox. I think that covers it! Hopefully it will help out. My regulator was weeping at the outer seal. No drivability issues, just the smell of gas when the car was started. Seems the AC was sucking it in! Fortunately I don't smoke! Andy |

Thanks Andy!
Great step by step instructions!
I was in the midst of doing the work and was trying to figure out if there was fuel pressure before and how to take the circlip off. I remembered I had a snap ring plier and that did the trick. There was no pressure, by the way, when I finally got the circlip and the FPR off. I hadn't released the pressure from the valve you mentioned in your post. Mine is a 1992. The tough part was fitting the new FPR on, I added some oil on the two seals but still had to tap it on with a small rubber hammer before it would sit properly. Thanks again for this post, it'll be good search reference for anyone else wanting to do this. |

Glad the instructions helped. I'm thinking that there may have been no fuel pressure due to the one way valves in the fuel pumps being a bit tired. After some time it's been my experience that the valves in the Bosch pumps age and no longer hold the downstream bits of the system at pressure. Seems to affect starting, that's about it.
