Where to: cadmium plate and Cryo Treat 500E rotors

Hello,

You all know my brake fiasco pretty much.

I ended up with an extra set of 500E/500SL/320SL Zimmermann cross-drilled (casted holled) rotors which I got from Mercedesshop, and the other set (on my car) from my mechanic (he had them in stock) and I had already ordered the set from MS.

I want to send them in for cadmium plating and then cryo treatment. I would prefer a company in california.

Let me know,

I didnt know porterfield did cryo. I am doing a group buy with them soon on pads, probably in a month or so before race season.

Can you tell me of someone that cadmium plates rotors near porterfield?

Do you know anyone looking for 996 turbo front brake set up (I have a set)? I will email you.

Porterfield probably sends them out to a local shop. Call and ask, maybe they'll tell you who they send it to. I know there's a shop in the Burbank / No. Hollywood area. I took some trans. gears from my Norton there a few years back. I'll see if I can find their name and address when I get home.

Regarding the cadmium plating, I was watching a program on Speed the other night where they were upgrading the disk brakes on some American iron and the replacement discs were, in their words, "zinc-washed". They had a nice bright silvery appearance which I assume would stand up to heat well. If I recall correctly cad plating has a kind of yellow-gold, almost iridescent appearance. So which is preferable, zinc-wash or cad plating for long term rust prevention in a harsh environment? Any metallurgists out there?

rotor enhancements

i can understand putting rotors thru a cryo process, but what are you looking for in cadmiun plating, the gold tone found in high grade rotors such as brembo comes from the process they are made by, its called meonite and its a type/process with cast iron, plating will coat the suface and create a barrier from deterioration but after your rotors have worn down about 10-12 thousanths the plating will be gone and so will any benefit you expected

Post Cad Plate

I Use a Shop in Orange Ca Cadilliac Plate service

The Cad Plate on the brake rotors are good for looks on the Hub area...Not the Nasty Rusted look..sure spray paint would work BUT cad plate gives a Very nice Touch... More so with larger Open style rims. The Paint wont last and the Cad holds up Great!..I Have Done it for Years on Several cars

Yes It wears off on the Pad surface area ......

Mainly to make the non-pad contacting surfaces look good.

So the meonite is put into the cast iron mixture to keep it from rusting?

meonite content

in the brembo sales promo it leads you to believe it enhances wet condition braking, please dont get me wrong i am and dont claim to be an expert but found this info in brembo literature concerning both car and superbike brembo products, your point about non friction surface protection makes sense, thats why you find the grey coating on your factory rotor non contact surfaces

The cadmium plating wears off the contact surface of the rotor where the pads sit, however all the vanes of the rotor (vents) are fully coated, and also the hat, so I think it is worth it to get the rotors cadmium plated. And then after that Cryo treated.

I am planning on doing them both, but cadmium first, then cryo.

If you still have that literature I would like to read it. Maybe you can give me a brochure number or post it.

Thanks,

yes, i will recover the info and find a way to forward it to you, as a quick check i ran "meonite" thru internet search and found info on people using meonite rotors and various other products, but no data on the process or its benefits
