M104 valve-guide & headgasket ?
While getting a new headgasket for my C36 engine, my "new" tech said that some of the valve-guides on the C36 M104 AMG engine are loose.
Do I replace *ALL* of them, or just the problem ones? Also, when you replace the valve guides, do you have to re-surface/cut the respective valves and valve-seats so you have a good seal again? My thought is that when replacing the valve-guides, you can't get the valve exactly positioned and seated where it was previously, so you need to re- surface/cut the valves & valve-seats for a perfect fit/seat/seal. Also, anything else I should check or replace while doing the head-gasket? Thanks in advance, :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

I can't answer all of your questions, but the valve guides are cheap.
Since you're taking your head off, it would seem penny-wise and pound foolish to only replace one or two guides.

If you are removing it anyways go ahead and have all the valve guides and seals done, along with a valve seat grind.
Also, at least, I suggest polishing the combustion chambers and exhaust ports. This reduce carbon build up in the combustion chamber and exhaust ports that leads to restricting air flow and helps the engine to run cleaner. |

When I Worked for Mercedes They Required the Valves and seats to be recut when valve guides were replaced..Please inspect the Exhaust Valves for pits and stem wear When ever the 104 head is off I would recommend to reseal the rear heater pipe/o-ring and to clean and or update the EGR pipe! LOTS of room with the head off Since the Head is off..send it out for some flow work.. and a set of headers ..port matched Last edited by mark cummins; 01-27-2004 at 12:22 AM. |

What's the book and actual time for a head-gasket? I did everything including flushing the radiator 3-times with citric-acid, replacing the oil-pressure sending unit, and replacing the fuel-pressure regulator in 26-hours.
I sent the head out to install new valve guides via the chill & heat method, and had them re-surface/grind/cut the valve seats where needed, and install new valve-stem seals for $350. :-) neil |
