I understand that MB offered a "sportline" option on the 124, which included "somewhat shorter, stiffer springs". Does anyone know how these MB springs compare to Sachs, H&R or Eibach 'pro-kit' springs? Eibach claims a progressive rate preserves ride quality. I don't want to lower the car to the point that rear camber is a problem, or make the ride race track stiff. I will be using Pilot SX or Pilot XGTV4 tires, and depending what I do on springs, Bilstein HD or Sport struts.
Any recommendations? |

You may want to point the tire question into the tire forum. The sportline option gave a 20% stiffer ride from the information I have read.

I can't seem to lay my hands on it right now but, the Sept/Oct 1997 issue of the Star listed all of the parts necessary to convert a regular 300E over to Sportline. You might get some additional insight there.

As far as I can tell the Sportline stuff is in the "middle ground" between stock and a full Eiback/H&R, Bilstein Sport, AMG swaybar, etc conversion. Anything MB used as OE, even as a sports package, will still ride in a civilized manner and be generally free of negative side effects.
As for tires (should be in wheels and tires but we here now) I'd recommend the Pilot SX in Sportline size 205/60/15. They will handle much better than the XGT's (should also be quieter as well) unless you have to deal with lots of snow/slush in which case the XGT's are a better bet. Hope this helps...Lee |

My suggestion on spring is that I would go with the eibach sportline springs. I have H&R and I think it is a bit of too low. From Personal experience Eibach offers better handling.
Don't worry about the ride, I have a set of Koni sports ( adjusted to the firmest position), H&R sports spring, eibach sway bars, and 17 rims. The car handles much better then the stock 300E, while remain I say 75% of the orginal comfort. Hope this help Pete regards |

Well M.B. did a great job with the Sportline option!! Still a good ride with better handling. Boge was the supplier of shocks, but the "sport" Bilsteins are equal. with these springs & shocks you will still have a nice car w/out excessive tire wear! There is special alignment specs for Sportline option!!

Since the car is lower than normal W124 cars then the camber is more negative. Have the alignment shop set the camber 0.4deg lower than normal. Also have the toe-in set to 0.2deg or 3mm.
