Octane Efficiency Question

This may seem like a dumb question but I'd like to know a legit answer... My AMG manual from 1986 says the motor needs 93 RON to run most efficiently. We only have 91 octane here so I plan to mix higher octane fuel or tolulene with it to acheive the 93 rating. (Keep in mind, I haven't regularly driven my car since the engine transplant, it will be ready in about 2 weeks.) My question is, if I get the octane to 98 or something, will the car run worse than on 93 octane? I don't want to mess with the timing at this point. Any info would be appreciated.

Well...not sure I can truly answer your question, but maybe I can help clarify your octane requirements.

In the U.S., the octane ratings posted on the pump are in the (R+M)/2 method, also called Road Octane.

The R is short for Research Octane Number or RON, and the M is short for Motor Octane Number or MON. The average of the two is what is listed on the pump.

RON is always higher than MON.

If AMG specified a 93 RON rating, then you'll probably be ok running 91 octane U.S. gasoline.
