Matching keys for different cars. can it be done?
I have two 124 wagons. A 1987 300TD and a 1995 E320. It would be nice to have one key for both cars.
Key blanks are the same. One car would need to be rekeyed on four doors, tail gate and ignition lock. How can it be done and how? Henry

It can be done
All it takes is time, initiative and money, not necessarily in that order. Just replace all the lock assemblies with 'stated lock number' locks.
The bad side of this is when you go to sell your car, the buyer will also have the key to your remaining car! And vice-versa! Would you really want that?? Just my $.02 Tobias MB 3 MBs |

In theory all you would have do do is buy all the locks and keys from the dealership and install them in the other car. I'm not sure what problems you might have with the factory security system and other changes that took place between the model years.

It just hit me!!
Your original question stated you would need to rekey all four doors!!! Do you have a key now for the rear doors?? If so, which car has exterior locks on the rear doors??
Why not save money and just put remote openers on both cars that use the same frequency or remote? They are much easier to use and nice to have. Then you can unlock the other doors once inside and just leave the key in the ignition or in the console. This would save you a bunch of money on parts and installation. Tobias MB 3 MBs |

Not sure what i was thinking. I only need to rekey (relock) the front and tail gate. No keys for the rear doors. Not to concerned with the selling the car and the next owner having a key for my car. It only matters if they know.

why?
why all that work?
1987 300TD and a 1995 E320. It would be nice to have one key for both cars. if the key blank is the SAME FOR BOTH cars then you can flip the key. what i mean is take the first car...1987 300TD and have a key cut for it on only one side, then take the second key pattern, the 1995 E320 and have it cut for that on the other side, there is only one set of tumblers in the locks and the key can be cut on two sides for two cars, just file a notch for a car to fit.. eg - notch the E320 side common thing to do with a replacement lock or ignition and dont want two keys... that is IF BOTH THE KEY BLANKS ARE THE SAME...i am not sure that they are.. Hope this helps, or is helpfull for the future Jake |

Sounds to easy. But that is when it works. I am a little confused on the notch concept. I imagine it is to tell one side from theother. If that is the case i understand.
If I understand you correctly, only half the key is used. Be it the right or the left, as opposed to the top and the bottom. I will waste a blank and get it done. Thanks. Henry
