I'm looking for advice on getting more power out of my 1990 300E. I've upgraded the wheels to AMG monoblock 17" (the slightly rougher ride doesn't bother me and I love the look), blacked out the bottom half of the car for a nice monotone look, and have done a lot of custom work with the stereo/video/multimedia system. Now it's time to make the car faster...what are my options? I was told that a cat -back exhaust will give me the best bang for the buck (over a remus exhaust) If I can get it up over 200hp I'd be happy...250 and I'd be ecstatic. I admittedly don't know much about engine and drivetrain work so forgive my ignorance...all I know is I want my "E30 AMG" (soon to be badged that way) to get up and go a little faster than your typical 300E, which are a dime a dozen around here (do these people EVER clean their alloys??!!) Anyway, thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You may want to use the search feature for this question as I have seen it many times in the performance paddock

Thanks for the tip, I see why people come here every day! Count me as a regular too...I dug through the articles and I'm starting to think about the Sportline package, if you guys still offer it, to improve handling. One post that stuck out was the mention of stroking the inline 6 to a 3.6 liter displacement...what would the associated costs be for my application, and what kind of performance boosts/negative effects should I expect? I've seen a 190 "E36" before but I'm assuming that's the V-6, not the inline 6...or did was the C36 engine he dropped in there also an I-6?

Thanks for a wonderful forum, you've gained a loyal user

The Sportline suspension conversion is available in PartsShop but, you need to submit a Parts Information Request so we can match the components for your specific car.
One of our members is installing the kit at the end of this month and will provide a review.

The Sportline parts are being installed today and tomorrow! I'll do some miles over the weekend, write up my notes, scan the photos, and get them on to you next week. The Sportline tires/allignment will go on after the next paycheck, and I'll update the photos/drive comments then.

The exhaust system is a great starting place, but don't start at cat back. Find a performace catalyst & have it replaced also. Suppling the engine with a bit more will help make up for the increased exhaust flow.

The 2-valve per cyl 300E is a good car. Super-powerful off the line is not its natural forte. Stroking the engine to 3.6 liters will help a bunch but it will also cost a bunch. If we are already re-doing the exhaust, and you have the $$$ to consider the 3.6 stroker, you should consider a twin-turbo kit. The details of the kit have been discussed prior on the Shop Forum but here is the nutshell. Mosselman (now bought by CEC) has a kit that is good for approx 300HP/300lb-ft for about $7500 bucks plus installation. If you didn't do any of your own installation it could probably run you another $1000 or so. You would have to rework the exhaust system anyhow if you are doing the turbos. Sounds like the rest of the car is up to it. You would probably also want to upgrade cooling. I'll defer to Benzmac or MB DOC as to whether a 400E radiator would fit. A well done turbo kit (even at stock compression) would make that car a real rocket. With sportline suspension and the AMG rims you could actually do something with the power. A 400E front brake swap should work and still fit under 15" wheels. The 500E setup needs at least 16"ers.

Hope this helps...Lee

MB Doc,

Since you mentioned the cat, I thought I would ask about the impact of gutting the precats to increase flow, particularly on a higher mileage vehicle? I understand that the euro models did not have these.

Thanks as always.

Nick, yes the pre cats are restrictive, and I have seen many of them fail and become plugged. The problem with removing or gutting any catalyst is the emission control laws. Most muffler shops will not alter factory emission devices becuase of fines they may be hit with if uncle sam busts them. One option might be to get euro down pipes and then install a hi-flow performance cat.
