gotta 85 380se want to know if a newer engine of the v8 type ( 420 500 560 ) will work with existing wiring harness and tranny just looking for more power & reliability when i say newer i mean 90s and above

Any of the engines will fit. The best choice is the 420 engine. You will have to change some parts from 380 to 420 but this is a good swap. Since the fuel systems are different & so is the ignition, you will have to use parts from these systems. I've seen several of these swaps made.

You know,,,I was thinking(uh oh) and I think that the 85 and earlier 500 engine might just bolt in. Wires and all. In fact I think I might know of one in the $1800.00 dollar range?

The wider block 5.0 & 5.6 use many different parts including some different exhaust parts. To use the 4.2 engine you will have to swap the intake manifold & a/c mounting but most other parts are the same.
