Climate Control Panel, Blower Motor
I apologize for using the SL Forum for this question but mabey someone can help.
I Have a 1988 300 SE that the Climate Control system has quit on. I've checked everything that can be checked under the hood. HOW DO I REMOVE THE CLIMATE CONTROL COVER ON THE CONSOL (IT WAS EASY ON MY SL AND SLC) ALSO HOW DO I GET TO THE BLOWER MOTOR (AGAIN, IT WAS IN THE MOTOR COMPARTMENT ON THE SL AND SLC AND EASY TO GET TO, NOT SO IN THE 300 SE) Any help would be really appreciated. Lee....PS I tried this question in the Tech Help and got no responses. |

blower motor
the blower motor is located behind the glove box. I don't have a glove box because my 91 has an airbag so I can't tell you how to remove it. May also need to remove any upper kick panels. The fan is mounted vertically in a plastic enclosure. 3 or 4 screws and a couple of clips hold it in. Remove them, carefully or the fan will fall out on the floor. There are a couple different climate control systems so I'm not sure if this applies to you, but the latter ones are very dependent on air flow. If the fan doesn't work, then system won't work. I'd check it first. If it is bad brushes, get them from George Murphy, 423 428 9175. There are a number of reports that the control boxes go bad. I have not had that problem. I think you get the box out by removing the ashtray, remove the ashtray frame by unscrewing the 2 visible screws. Looking up from where you removed the ashtray you should see 2 screws holding the wood facia on, remove them and carefully remove the wood. You should be able to see how to get the climate control module out. Not sure, the radio might have to come out. If so, make sure you have the code for reinstallation. I think I have read about removing the wood on this board. Maybe try a search for "removing center console" or words similiar to get more informtion. I think George Murphy has modules also if you need a new one.

I've got an '88 300SEL and replaced the blower motor about a year ago (or so). If you have the factory 126 Service CD, the directions for doing this are spot on. The most difficult thing that I can remember was removing the side kick panel in the passenger footwell. Everything else was easy.

Thanks Mike, Re: Blower Motor
Mike, I mentioned, and the other responder mentioned that everything that was associated with the heat and AC is not working. His was corrected by repairing/replacing the blower motor. Was yours a similar experience, ie did nothing work until you got the blower motor fixed. I'm asking kind of a chicken and egg question. I know my approach to this is going to be. remove and bench test the blower motor, if its bad then the fix is straightforward, fix the motor. If it passes a bench test then I'll have to look into the controls.
Thanks Again for your post, Lee |

I replaced mine because it was squealing, pretty badly. I also replaced the vacuum pods for the recirculation flap. It was stuck open and allowing too much fresh (hot) air in.
I did end up resoldering the solder joints in the pushbutton assembly on my SL. The fan was cutting out intermittently.
