Leaking hub?

My '85 380SL is leaking grease from the front left (driver side) hub. The other side doesn't show any signs of grease, nor do the rear hubs. Don't notice any problems with handling or strange noises. But I'm assuming something isn't right. Any ideas on what the problem might be and possible repairs?

Where exactly is the grease coming out of? Did you pull the wheel to inspect the grease cap?

best,

Dave

Most likely it's a bad wheel bearing. They go bad after a while.

Just a thought...since you did not specify where the leak was emerging. If it is leaking on the inside or back side of the hub assembly, it is likely to be related to a faulty wheel seal. If, however, it is leaking from the outer area, like on the face of the wheel from the center cap, then perhaps the hub was serviced with the wrong (excessive) amount of wheel bearing grease. There is a specification for amount as well as type of grease for each hub, about 150g for each hub as I recall. As with many things, more is not necessarily better.

The repair would be to have both hubs serviced by a good shop, if you cannot do it yourself. They should use the proper type and amount of grease as well as new hub seals.

Again, just random thoughts, hope it helps.
