Question Valve seals and headlights

Hello everyone,
I have two questions regarding my 83 380SL.
1) Can the valve seals be changed without removing the cam? How much of a job is it?
2)The Hi and Lo beams on the car seem strange: Low beam works fine, but when I turn on the High beams only 3 lights come on, the two High beams and the left Low beam. The right Low beam works in the Low beam position, but not on High beam.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Otto

Swap your low beam bulbs and see if the problem follows the bulb. If so, replace it.

You can do the seals without removing the cams. It is quite a job. You bring each cylinder to TDC and support the valve with compressed air through the spark plug hole.

Valve seals and electrical

Hi Ctaylor 738,
thanks for the info, it was just what I was looking for.
I have come up with another problem/question: On the driverside of the radiator is a 7 pin connector that was disconnected when I bought the car. When I connect it I hear a fast clicking sound from the top front of the engine. Connecting it seems to affect my gauges as well: the water temp gauge does not register more than 60 degrees, but I know the engine temp is higher because I measured it. I think my sl is posessed!

Unfortunately, I don't have a 380 to look things up on any more. I did look at the wiring diagram, and the temp sensor goes to connector c151, but there is no more information on it on the CD.

Can you locate the clicking sound?

Hi ctaylor
I just checked the wiring on the 7 pin connector. It leads to (or from ) a aluminum housing in front of the right cyl bank. The housing is connected to the throttle linkage and has VDO on the back. The clicking sound is intermittend.
The headlight problem is solved. I didn't know the lowbeam is a double fillament. I assumed all 4 lamps where single fillament. Oops!!

Sounds like the connector for the cruise control.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.

No small stalk on the left side of the steering column? Or it doesn't work?

I can't think of anything else in that location that would be connected to the throttle linkage and say VDO on it besides the CC actuator. VDO makes this stuff for MB.

How about a picture.

HI CTAYLOR,
I finally got around to take my steering wheel off and do a bit of exploring.
Since the car has the cruise control actuator the rest of the controls had to be somewhere. Anyways, after pulling the wheel I found the remains of the cruise control underneath the rubber cover for the turnsignal. It had been broken off at the end of the cruise lever! So this is why the previous owner disconnected the 7 pin plug.
Any idea where I can find a lever with the little boxthat attaches to the steering colum? It says 9104 on the back.

You can try Roger at ATVM. His email is atvm2@prodigy.net. I know he has one because he bought the Wayward Womna, my ex-380SL.

Another suggestion is Bob Neuberth at TMC 410 789-7896.

Just about any recycler would have them, and you could probably get one from a MB dealer parts dept.
