1977 450sl catalytic converter
NY state requires this be on car even though antique and safety inspection only, (no emmissions test). Can I take converter apart, remove rattling insides, reinstall and how does this effect performance, exhaust noise? Any suggestions appreciated. How to disassemble on car? Thanks, Abe G

I'm confident that it would have a profound effect on noise level. The catalytic converter on this car actually replaces the resonator found on earlier models.

Well, I would just replace the cat, but I suppose you could save $150 or so by cutting an older style resonator into your system.

converter question again Bo one out thjere that can help?
I was advised to rod out the catalytic converter with 1/2 inch steel rod about 2 feet long to improve performance and eliminate old converter interior. However attatched pipes on this 1977 converter are longer (and offset)so I wont be able to "rod out" converter. I note that there are small screws around the converter edge. Can this converter by taken apart and platinum section be removed? Advice appreciated. Abe G [B]PS Anyone out there that can help?

around the cat
I simply took my car to a muffler shop and had them cut out the converter and replace it with a piece of exhaust pipe. It does not make it much louder but I do notice a little more pep on the take off. There is no emissions requirement in Texas if your car is more than 20 years old.
