Inexpensive, hell, CHEAP! Hard Top Hoist

I was looking into the various hard top hoists and came across a single (other one apparently lost) Yakima roof rack at a garage sale. It looked promising so I bought it for 2$ and, after adjustment, it fitted just fine. I added a double pulley setup for a hoist and, after careful testing, it works very well and holds the top quite securely. Not bad for less than 10$.

That's as cheap as you can get!

I purchased a "MB hoist unit" for around $150 only to discover that it really is just some off-the-shelf pulleys and a boat winch! You can make one of these if you are so inclined and save a lot of $$$.

I bought a boat winch, a few pulleys, and some steel cable (good for 3000lbs) and a few straps. I put the straps around the top and hooked the cable to it. I can now pull the top up to the ceiling of my garage and leave it there all winter.

I think I paid $50CDN (about US$30-35) for everything and it works perfectly. I did buy two huge eye bolts and some chain so I could "safety-chain" the top to my ceiling once it was up. Never got around to installing the chain last winter, and the top didn't move. I'll definately install it this year..

If anyone wants a picture or some details on the parts I bought to make this work, let me know.

Neal

Mine was a gift

A friend was storing a hoist for a a friends Jeep hard top and when he moved he gave it to me. The friend sold his Jeep. No winch, just a 3 fall block and tackle with nylon rope and a spreader bar with straps and hooks. I had to modify it a bit and I use 2x8s and rope as a support when raised for the summer. I just put the hard top on the other day and I forgot how quiet the car can be.
