85 280 SL. What's it worth?
Red/tan Euro for sale locally. Cars looks pretty good but will need paint, dash, seatcovers and carpet. I can't see any evidence of body work and it has both tops. 162K on the speedo but I wouldn't bet on that. Kelly and Edmunds don't list the car and NADA says low retail is $11,700 .

The owner is asking $5,500 for this one. I have no idea of the mechanical condition, but I intend to test drive it Monday.

be sure and check all the paper work regarding its importation and conversion to U.S. Federal specifications (all window glass, all light bulb, taillights, headlights, emissions system, door braces, seat belts, air bags, bumpers, key warning buzzers, etc.) Without that paper work--you are buying a pig-in-a-poke and could get hit with a 'fail' at the next state inspection and a real big headache and expense.

$2-$6K, depending on condition. At this age and mileage it could be a complete wreck, or a great car, depending on its repair history. Most of the suspension parts will be toast if they have not been replaced.
You might insist on an emissions test (if applicable in your area) prior to purchase. If it fails, you may be in deep doo-doo because they have aftermarket lambda that no one will touch and you probably can't get parts for. Fully agree with "great cars" comment, though.

Hey Chuck - question for you
Quote:
can you explain why you say the suspension parts will be toast? This is only a 1985 car. My 1980 169K miles has all the original parts underneath including clutch and muffler system, shocks, all suspension parts - never been touched and I see no reason to replace anything. I do not mean to be argumentative but more want input on why or what in the past has caused anyone to replace suspension parts. These are pretty bullet proof cars.

What's this I hear about the subframe cracking and causing the drivetrain to rear up under acceleration and turns??

The rubber pieces that hold the various pieces of the suspension together dry out, crack, and just plain wear out from flexing. This is particularly true for the bushings that go between the front and rear subframes. Tie rod ends wear out. Stabilizer bushings get hard. Springs lose their tension over time. Shocks loose their dampening power. When this happens the cars sit lower, rattle, wander a bit, bounce, etc.
Neither of my high-mileage 107's had any suspension stuff replaced and they both needed/need it. Most of the shops & owners I talk to have the same issues with the higher-mileage cars. If you have 169K on the original parts, good for you. I think weather and road conditions may affect how much life you get out of these parts.
