1984 380 sl european 6cyl engine swaps

I have a mint 84 with 54,000 miles from europe,,,straight 6,,,the motor is knocking bad,,and need to figure a cheap way out..any suggestions for american 6 cylinders swap? I can get a 6 out of an 86 260 e now,,but not sure of interchanges...thanks T.J.

So do you have a 280SL? If so, there are lots, and I mean lots, of used engines around. What kind of knock do you have? 54K is very early for one of these engines to give up.

Might be a 380 that had an engine swap, some 2.8 with a lot of miles.

Yeah - a few months back I ran into one. A 74 350SL some one swapped a 500sl badge on. The guys on this forum were kind enough to point that out to me when I posted some questions on it. But shouldn't he have seen that on the title when he bought it? If he posts his vin it would help. Myself, I'm looking for a 560 badge set for my 280 for those nights I go to opera.
