R129 back seat

Fella's,
I've been deeply in love with the R129 model since ages. Lately, it seems that the prices of this model are getting within my reach so I'm thinking of getting one to drive during the Summer (and keep my W210 for the Winter). HOWEVER, I'm part of a three-person family these days, and the R129 has only two front seats. Can anyone please tell me if that space behind the front seats is suitable for carrying a 6-year-old every now and then, without causing a rebellion? I know it has some sort of cushioning/upholstery, but it's not a proper seat I believe, and mainly a place to put luggage etc.

THANKS!

Yes you can put a rear seat in that area. As a matter of fact, I noticed quite a number of R129 in Europe are equiped with rear seat, although it is not as common in the U.S. There are companies in the U.K. sell the rear seat with seat belt and all. They are so good that they look OEM from Mercedes. I will try to find the link for the company I saw once in a magazine.

I have a seat, http://www.jjproducts.net/ . I rate them first class The prior owner put it in, I emailed for info, they called me !!

It isn't bad, seat back flips up, there are seat belts etc.

You wouldn't want anyone over about 5 riding back there, although it came in handy for a quick trip with 3 the other day.

I'll warn you though, they ain't cheap.

Try and save the original rear deck, I've considered trying to put mine back to original and the prior owner didn't save the parts removed. On my 1990 it replaces the rear deck, I think some later it hooks to it ??

Here's another thread up here about them.

I hate to say it but when your traveling with three you are going to be taking the W210. I would not put a person in the back of this car even if you did put the retrofit seat in the car.

Do you have to disable the roll-bar with someone back there? Seems dangerous.

www.************************ has them as well.

I considered the option 5 years ago when my daughter was 5. Now 10, I'm glad I passed on it. Figured if it was safe to have her there, MB would have put a seat there when it left the factory!

Only time she rides back there is when she and her friends sit on the canopy area and act like "Rose Bowl" parade queens in the annual neighborhood parades!

Like David said, the roll bar activation may be a concern even at low speeds. I can't imagine what would happen to someone sitting on that roll bar when it decided to pop up on it's own.

The rear seats are an option in Europe, at least for the 107...as mentioned before. They are not here because Mercedes did not believe the market would support the option, therefore they avoided the expense of DOT approval.

Can't the roll bar be locked up or down?
