1973/450 sl axles

What are the sypthoms of a failing rear axle.? No grease leak or cracked boots. I do hear a clacking sound at speed which has stopped. I don't want the car falling apart on the highway. HELLLLLPPP!!!!!

That's the classic noise that worn or dry CV joints make. You need to get someone experienced to run it on a lift and listen to assess.

I put the car on jackstands to check the axles and found the rear sway bar link from the left side missing. I suspect the link detached and was banging/clacking until it fell off. I believe this may explain the sound of a dragging exhaust when I made turns ( sway bar rubbing against the frame/etc. Any thoughts. I hope this will solve my problem.
