Is there a Chrysler in your Benz? - Origins of Climate Control 2 System
I own a 1980 450SL and have spent considerable time and effort in getting the automated climate control system working to factory specs. This was accomplished by diagnosing the system with the service manual on cd and information gathered on this forum and others to replace numerous vacuum actuators, amplifiers etc.
Being a born and raised German, I have always been confounded by the uneccessary complexity and "rube goldberg" nature of the design and thought I would research it further as I couldn't imagine a German engineer in his right mind could have come up with such a thing. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a website for Chrysler Imperial restorers that has service manuals for their "Auto Temp 2" climate control system. This system is identical to the one found on the 1978 to 1981 450sl and 380sl, but is explained in easy to understand language and diagrams. If you are interested, click the link and go to the literature/factory manual section for the Chrysler service maunuals for the 1971 to 1973 Imperial. The link is http://imperialclub.com/. Happy reading. fasted |

When was it when Daimler bought Chrysler? Must have been after 1980 something since Iakoka was running it up until the buy-out, or shortly before?
My 80 450SL CC system works only on high and in the defrost mode only. I noticed a vac mod missing at the center top under dash. Also there are some vac hoses coming in from the vac switching box in front of the fire wall, (eng side) that end going nowhere! Next years project, but very helpful to know more info..Thanks BB |

This system was in fact developed by Chrysler and used in various up-scale models until 1976. MB licensed it and kept using it until 1981. This is the servo only. The vacuum-operated flaps and other controls are Mercedes.
DEF is hardwired around the servo and vacuum so you can clear the windshield even if the system fails (as it frequently does). Actually, when it works, it's a decent system. I had to put a push-button assembly, a servo, and an amplifier in my 380SL and it worked very well.

Same system as my old 79 300D? First service (after 1 month of ownership, this was 1990) was $1500 on the climate control.
I still fondly remember - seeing the mud-like coolant spew onto my mechanic as he was flushing the heater core! BTW DCX (DAIMLERchrysler for those not from Detroit) came to be in the mid-1990s. best, Dave |
