Verify year model?

Hi there. I'm new to this forum. I am looking at buying a 500SL, but need to verify the year model from the VIN. Is there someone knowledgable that can look this up for me? The VIN is BFA66E7MF025492. The shop owner that I talked to thinks it may be a 92, but is unsure. Any issues to look out for?

Thanks

year

i think you may have posted your vin wrong, any way you can determine the year by the 10 digit. this includes using the WDB. see the chart below, it looks like yours may be a model year 1991 due to the M
J=1988
K=1989
L=1990
M=1991
N=1992
P=1993
R=1994
S=1995
T=1996
V=1997
W=1998
X=1999
Y=2000
1=2001
2=2002
3=2003
4=2004

Yup......according to Ray's chart the ID looks to be a 1991 model.

The serial # of my 1991 SL300 129 also is ********MF029281. The picture of your's looks like it has been "updated" with the mono paint scheme of later year models.

NOTE: Usually these lists date as MFG year. Model year may be later one year. In your case, 1991

I'm a bit confused, you attatched a picture of a red coupe. I'm not familiar with the 129, but like the older 107, I imagine the car has both a hard and soft top. This factory list indicates a folding top, fabric black! This would suggest you have a convertible!

Check engine number as well as stamped body VIN. Check transmission number as well with this list. This list is genuine and produced from Daimler/Chrysler, Germany.

Cheers.................BB

Nice work, BB.

Did you call MB for a faxed cardex?

Oh, it is a detachable hardtop you're seeing.

Actually, the car is a convertible with both hardtop and black folding softtop!! Thanks for the info, BB, just what I was looking for!

The car is in the market for the equivalent of US$ 20k. Is this out of line with current USA values? Bear in mind the car was a US import into South Africa, and is a LHD car in a RHD market, therefore with less market appeal. I have a LHD Porsche, however, so the LHD does not bother me at all, in fact is partly desireable on my part because its different than anyone elses.

tecqboy, can you explain more? The paint on the car looks original, in fact quite a few blemishes are present indicating no respray has been done.

I am not an expert on the history of these vehicles. I didn't get into Mercedes until quite recently. I am a former AMC (Rambler) convert. So, anyone more knowledgable, please feel free to correct this. Anyhow, I thought that the 129 Series cars from 1990 thru 1994 had bumpers and lower body trim color painted with a flat finish or sometimes a contrasting color (black). Your car looks to have all pieces painted in gloss. That's why I thought it was possibly a 95 or later. A 1991 SL500 would sell for about $15K US were I live from a private party; a few thousand more at a dealer with a short warrantee. So much depends on the condition and the previous maintenance. These cars require strick maintenance to give good service.
