Considering V12SL's, differences in model years suggestions etc.

I am considering a V12 SL, but I have very little knowledge of MB past 1989. I did notice the resale value of these cars is very low compared to the initial purchase price, which makes them affordable for my to buy. But are they affordable for me to own?

I do all my own work and have worked at various MB dealerships and specialty shops between 1978 and 1988 so I am confident in taking 100% care of it mechanicaly. I am just wondering why such low resale value and are parts so astronomical that it may be impractical for me to own. How do these cars compare maintenance wise with say a Ferrari 328 which I have also worked on and am also considering.
