88 560sl ignition cutoff for unknown reason

My 88 560SL has been having ignition cutoff problem for the last few years. The key fits in the ignition switch fine, it turns, locks, unlocks, etc without any problem. I do notice that the ignition switch feels little loose. I would start the car and drive normally and every now and then the car's ignition cuts out while I am driving with all warning lights lighting up (highway at 60 mph or locally at 25 mph). I stop the car by pulling the car to the side of the road, put the gear in park and recrank. The car restarts with little effort ( starter turns and everything feels normal ). Could this be a loose ignition wire problem? This problem is unnerving and potentially very dangerous as my car can stall anywhere, anytime. Fortunately it does not happen very often but I would like to get to the bottom of the problem. Should I change the ignition switch and all related components to be on the safe side? Thanks in advance for your expert advice.

The first place I would look is the ignition switch (the electrical part behind the mechanical locking part). Mine was bad with another symptom-blower motor would cut in and out, jiggling the switch would make it better. It was not extremely difficult to replace (but don't lose the screws, easy to do) and not very expensive. You do need to remove the instrument cluster though. There are good instructions on this site.

Thanks for your input. Anyway you can elaborate the ignition switch replacement process? Last thing I want is to dismantle everything and not know what to do next.

Much appreciated if anyone else can help.
