Engine Info and best places to shop.

Hi all,

I am a new Mercedes owner and I am looking for information to tune-up my SL. I was told by the previous owner that the engine had been replaced or redone in 2003. The accessories however look very old/used, including the wires and plugs.

I need to know what engine I have to order some parts, but I haven't a clue as to where to look on the block. Can anyone help an ignorant person here? Also, where would be the best/cheapest place to get parts for the car? I will also be getting interior items such as carpet. Thanks for the help.

1979 450 SL

I bought my first MB (1976 450sl) about six months ago and am still trying to sort out similar questions.

In many cases the prices seen to be virtually the same from different suppliers. I've checked a number of prices on the link at top of this forum and they seem competitive.

But you should buy a copy of Hemmings Motor News (a monthly, avail. in any Borders, etc.) and there's a whole section of Mercedes specialty parts sources, used parts, etc. It's only $5 or 6.

Some specialize in interior, others things like radiators.

Try Fastlane at the top of this page and ask for Phil, tell'm Busy sent you. If Phil is busy, or on the toilet, or cant accommodate your requests, then try Adsitco.com or
http://www.kkmfg.com/catalogs.php or you can tap the links at this sleeper of an SL forum at http://oursl.com/ lots of links there, but not much activity (slooooow) as you will find yourself yawning!

When ordering parts, the year and model number are usually all that is needed.

Overall, I have been most satisfied with Ron at www.germanstar.net. Probably a dozen orders and never a problem.

Fastlane and www.buymbparts are also good, but use Worldpac who regularly seem to mix up orders. They have always been good at fixing the problem, but if you planned to do the brakes on Saturday and on Friday you got somebody else's tune-up parts you are dead in the water.

Our online catalog uses WorldPac. If you call or email Phil we use MANY more suppliers than WorldPac. The online catalog is convenient but not necessarily the best deal. ALWAYS call or email Phil to get personal service and the best deal.

Also, MercedesShop will only be here as long as Fastlane funds it.
No Fastlane = No MercedesShop

Thank you everyone for your response. I have a great deal of work ahead of me, but I am looking forward to it. If anyone is in the Baltimore/Washington area that has a '79 450 SL, I would love to see it to get a better idea on what I need to do. The last person who had this was trying to change it to a 500SL. Thanks again.

True dat!

If I go elsewhere for parts, it's because FastLane doesn't stock it!

I liked Adsitco.com

I bought tail lights at Adsitco.com for my '76 for $150 each and they were factory MB stuff. Best deal I could find. Beyond that, I've been doing the salvage yards.

I only listed adsitco as an alternative to FastLane, this forums sponsor. There are at least a half dozen other sites that cater specific to MB cars for both new and used parts. The idea here is to support this forum first and foremost, but I wasn't aware that FastLane sold used stuff too!
