I read your article and enjoyed all the great information there. Thanks ! I would like to point out however that I have a 96 SL320 and I do not consider myself less fortunate than an SL500 owner, just less hp. Thanks and have a great day!
Best Regards,
Brian

By the way, I have never driven an SL with the 5 speed, so I may be convinced if I drove one, but I always thought the tranny was so nice on my 95. I really don't like the constant shifting and I have driven a 03 AMG S500, and really did not like the constant shifting as I cruised the curves. Really like the torque of my engine without constant shifting to keep it going. JMHO.

It was OK for a first post but you're going to have to keep your nose to the grindstone. Journalistic and puncuation standards here are very high.

alkapin_sl,

Nice article, but I think there is one significant error... The 450Sl has a cast iron block, not aluminum...

I saw your site some time ago and I'm going to be in the market for a white 129 SL for my wife next year. Your piece convinced me to look out for a 97 or 98 model, which I'll do as the correct time approaches.

Cheers,
Gerry

Yeah, I'd think I'd go with a '97 or '98 model, too, but I probably get a '98 as he points out that the door handles were painted the same color as the body from '98 - '02.

Good Artical

However, got a question. I have a 1980 450 SLC 5.0 Euro. This car was not exported to the US as a production model. But, they and a number of 500SL's made their way into the US as personal imports. These were 107 chassis with the 5.0 liter engine and 4 speed automatic transmissions. I was just curious as to why these were not mentioned in your artical? Thanks, LEE

Because the R107 SLC was a full generation earlier than the R129 cars that he was discussing in his article.

Cheers,
Gerry

The automatic transmissions in SL300's (1990 - SL320) is a 5 speed. SL500's of the same vintage have 4 speed auto's.

The author has negative issues with the 99 and up v8 powerplants , sounds like a personal problem. This engine has proven itself over the years,3 valves instead of 4 . 1 cam instead of 2 and a dozen or so less horsepower. drive one and see if you notice the difference I did not notice any, if the engine is so worthless how come it still in production? You will find it in other models with V8's.Somebody must have hurt that boys feelings.
