Noticed a funny sound coming from the ploy V belt area yesterday

my 91 500SL suddenly for the 1st time yesterday made a funny noise and from inspection I hear it coming from the V-belt area, could it be loose and needs replacement? I also saw the battery charge indicator come on for 10 seconds and then disappear, which from the manual indicates a broken V-belt if the battery light stays on but my light did not stay on and indeed I had a poor battery. The belts seem tight enough not sure what is the noise.

not sure if the poor battery caused the light to come on but today I replaced the battery and see no battery light coming on and the noise in or near the V-belts is still there, any advise? besides taking to the dealer.

The battery charge indicator is fed directly from the alternator and so the batt has minimal impact on this warning. As your batt was dead and you have seen this charge indicator illuminate I would start to think about the alternator....sorry.

Of course if the belt isn't turning the alternator under load (slipping) then that would illuminate then charge indicator lamp too.

Battery was not completely dead

I know the alternator works fine as a few weeks ago the battery was flat and the alternator charged it after 30 mins of running, I do not use this car frquently.

The new battery was to resolve voltage issues with the soft-top, the battery light indicator only flickers a bit but does not come on and stay on all the time thats the confusing part.

Lea I think you are right

I noticed the light is starting to stick, which from your posts means a dying alternator? oh boy, that is the repercussions? no charge to the battery and eventually a dead battery.

UPON CLOSER look

the funny sound is definitely coming from the alternator area, either the generator is going bad or the belt at pulley 6 (91 V-belt) is slipping and not pulling the alternator pulley.

I have the MB WIS - diagnostic tool by MB, bought from EBAY, it has all the schematics. but too much mechanics for me computer geek
