Plastic window care

I am having three new plastic windows put into my soft top due to the existing plastic having split on both side windows. It's a 98, so I guess 7 years in the Texas heat has taken it's toll. Any advice on treatment/protectant that can be applied to lengthen the windows life and detard the typical hazing and cracking that happens with heat and daily use, thanks.

Larry

I use the Mercedes Plastic Window care on my windows, it does a great job, also while storing for the winter and summer I use a towel on both sides of the window while folding it in to keep the crease at a minumum. I live in Texas as well, but only use the soft top in fall and spring. The cracking will occur when operating the top at cold temps.

Top Care

This was my reply to another thread about plastic windows:

I just replaced my rear windows so I am starting from new. My brother-in-law had all the canvas and clear windows on his 50' Cabin Cruiser replaced 8 years ago. The guy that did the job said there is only one way to keep these windows looking new. LIQUID PLEDGE FURNITURE POLISH (use Lemon if you want your car to smell pretty). Those windows today look as good as the day they were installed!!! We are talking Southern California, constant sun exposure for 8 YEARS! Spray it on lightly and wipe until clear. You can not beat it.

I am using it religiously.

PLEXUS.

Used on motorcycle helmets, aircraft canopies, boat clear vinyl, my plastic presription eyeglass lenses, and my SL soft top windows. Somehow, it fills or smooths out scratches.

Use a very soft cloth, like the yellow ones from WalMart.

I also use Plexus. Shines the plastic and helps keep off the dirt. I have also used the 2 step process from Meguiars. It is best to tape off the canvus to keep the cleaning compound off the canvus. I have read that you should never use lemon on plastic windows.

I have found Hindsight to be very effective in removing light scratches and especially yellow contamination.

Out of interest, when they replaced the rear window did they have to remove the whole rear canvas?

Cheers

Lea,
In my case, yes, they did remove the rear canvas entirely. It's the lone way to do a good job of sewing in the new windows.

How much did that rear window and fitting cost Mike?

I've been told the labour is around 14 hours to replace the whole hood so I'm also wondering what percentage is down to the rear section?

Cheers
Lea

Lea,
This is a copy of another post I did.

It included all rear windows, a new finish bead around the base of the rear top section and labor. I also had him recover my center console arm rest, which was stained and discolored from use, sun and skin oil. Great job on that. Color and fit are PERFECT. The whole thing cost me $450.00.
I have recommended this guy to three other R129 owners. When you are interested, contact Mr. Demitrios Cisneros, Ph: 310-834-3859; cell 562-533-6915. He lives in a town just North of Long Beach, CA. I thing the name of the area is Whittier (spelling?). He is an older gent and works out of his garage at home. He will be slow and working alone takes time as removal and installation of the top is a two man operation. I was his assistant for both, because I wanted to learn what was involved and to speed up the job as I did not leave my car with him. Good Luck

More simply put after doing the job. Removal and installation of the rear section only should not take more than 4 or 5 hours. The key is to get the head liner out of the way so you can see better. Take it off and give it to your repair guy. Stuff everything in the top compartment, put you hard top on and drive until the rear is ready. Rewind video.

Hi there,
I just purchased my '97 SL500 40th AE.
Both tops are in excellent shape.
I had no idea, that the plastic Windows could be replaced without the fabric top. I like the towle idea alot also (I am also in TX).
Thanks alot.
