97 SL500: Higher Ratio Diff?
Would it be possible to swap in a higher ratio diff for a bit more exceleration?
What ratio and what diff? How much?

The SL280 and SL320 have a higher ratio final drive but when I was asked this question I was told they would not cope with the 500's torque. I think you'd have to worry about other drivetrain components, too.

I don't think the torque is a problem but there aren't many 129s in salvage yards - finding anything is going to be a challenge. ASR is also an issue. The swap should be about a day of labor - so you're probably looking at around $1500, maybe more.
