Is the Hood Pad necessary?
The hood pad recently fell off my 1988 560sl. I assume this pad's primary purpose is to protect the paint from the engine's heat. Is this pad really necesaary? Should i bother replacing it...and if so...where can I get a replacement? Thanks for your help.

I'm fairly certain that engine heat will contribute to the demise of the paint on the hood. If you go south about Knoxville, you will start to see cars (particularly red and blue cars) with burned hood paint. A manager at a very high-end paint shop in Atlanta (would only paint Glasurit) told me that red was the most easily burned paint.
I'ts only about $110 for the big one, the small one (behind the big one), and the 3M adhesive if you shop around. I'd guess anyone even slightly mechanically inclined could do this in a few hours. It's going to be almost impossible to get all the old stuff off without damaging the metal (remember, it's aluminum) and what remains of the old hood pad will look like crap. This is much cheaper than paint, and then there are noise reduction benefits also. You can try Fastlane or eBay, but 40-70 for the big pad and 30-60 for the small one seems to be the going rate.

removing the old one can be a mess, so if one fell out, you're already ahead of the game. The Mitchell book only shows less than 1.0 labor hour to hang new ones, so it's an easy DIY job, relatively speaking.
We used to spray Glasurit, got so many comebacks that we switched to Sikkens and Standox

I replaced mine on my SL for aesthetic reasons really, every time I opened the bonnet to show my bay the hanging and disintegrating mess looked appalling.
It wasn't expensive and only took an hour to scrap off the old and replace, however make sure you use high temperature adhesive. Use 3M high temperature spray adhesive - I forget the exact name but do a search. I previously used spray I had laying about in my local garage and over two weeks my nice new lining simply dropped off! Lea
