Unhappy 129 Ignition Tumbler

The ignition tumbler on my '90 SL has failed. The key will not turn to facilitate the removal of the lock from the ignition switch - despite all the typical wiggle, giggle, vibrate tricks applied. Every reference I have says that the tumbler assembly must be cut from the car. Is there anyone out there that has done this job? I would really like to hear from people that can coach me on this. Thanks for your help!

Hi Hans

I don't think you will have to cut the lock out, although being stuck in position two may cause some difficulty.

See my thread a while back regarding my ignition switch issues, Flashing Instrument Panel on ignition pos 2? - also note there is a link to a video detailing the removal.

Hope this helps
Lea

Tumbler Seized

LeaUK - Thanks! My tumbler will not turn to position 1. Do you know anyone that has cut one of these things apart?

Dumb question, but does the key itself show any signs of excess wear? I've seen keys worn badly enough to stop working.

worn key, failed tumbler

That is a good question, and I don't really know the answer as I do not have another key for comparison. The key and tumbler gave no warning signs of impending failure - worked perfectly up until they did not work. Any tips on how to proceed with cutting it apart? Thanks for your input!

Have you tried lubricating it (graphite, silicone) and then wiggling it? Do it for 20 minutes if you have to, then 20 more. I can't believe it won't come out given that it showed no signs of degradation. It's funny how they will break loose just when you are about the give up.

Turn that tumbler!

I have tried wiggling until both my hands cramped. Used the vibrating trick. Sprayed lubricants including Tri-Flow and graphite. That ignition tumbler just will not turn! Having spoken with 4 techs and 2 locksmiths that all said "You're not going to like this...." I'm thinking it's time for the cutting wheel. Does anyone know anybody who has done this? Thanks for the input!
