Replacement Key/Remote 99 SL

My 99 SL only came with one Key so am looking for replacement....called dealer and price is okay...but didn't get a definitive answer as to what's needed to get it to work...said it should reprogram itself once I stick in in keyslot. Anyone purchase/reprogram?

Thanks

Charles

key

There is three keys made for this car, the dealer have to order the key from the factory that matches your exact vin no. then they have to find out wich key you have, no.1, no.2 or no. 3 and then order you the right one that has'nt been issue already, you'll have to take the car to them for this unless you know wich number you have.

There are only two types of key for the 99 SL - Remote and Credit Card. They don't need the car to order, but will do to program - there is a sequence involving the drivers door and boot locks.

Keys

The 99 SL 500 came with 4 keys
2 Remotes with folding master keys no. 1 and no. 2
1 Valet key opens only the driver side door and ignition
1 Flat key opens all the locks
A replacement remote key will be no. 3 there is always the question asked at the dealer about wich key you have no. 1 or no. 2 and whether you want to replace either, and wich one you do have.
Don't know why that's what I went thru.

Must be different in the US to Europe then (RF regulations?) I got mine replaced purely on the basis of the chassis number. The transponder in the car does the programming.

No valet key in Europe, either. But then we don't have valets.

Good one, JJ. At night out here in the land of fruits and nuts, they close off public parking areas and insist you valet park your car for a fee. You could refuse and get all huffy, but then there is the paint job on your beloved SL to consider. As much as I hate it, I valet when requested.

You want a clone of the one you're using now. Make sure the dealer understands that. The last thing you want is a new key that they program your car for and it breaks your other keys.

I don't know about '99 but in '97 you are supposed to get 2 remotes, 1 flat key that fits everything and 1 valet key.

I ordered a new remote and they sent me the wrong remote type. Your remote probably has more than one button plus the 'panic' button, make sure they get you that type as well.

Update

Went to dealer....and parts guy said you don't have to worry about which key it is as Mercedes keeps track and won't send one that's already been issued.

Picked up key and had service tech come out to program. He held the lock button while turning the key in the ingition (tried the drivers door first but didn't work) and it was programed.

So $160.00 later I have a spare key.

Awesome. Here in California, they filmed the movie, gone in 60 seconds. Because of this, now they need the registered owner of the car to be present when you order and pick up the keys. We did not know this, and I went ot the dealer, and they would not release the key without my dad being there. He had to leave work, and rescue my sorry but, because my name is not on the title of the car. Oh well, keys are cheap for the wagon, so we ordered 3 that way I wont be at a loss if another one breaks.

Charles,

If you are a good schmoozer go to the local dealer, make an appt. for an oil change (or something cheap that you can't do at home, lambda set, etc.) and tell the service writer that you want (how many keys?) 1-3 keys that will work in your car. The order will then go to the parts dept. and then it will go to Mercedes Benz where they have your vin # on file with all of the necessary info. When the keys come in get the small job done and the dealer will then set up to your new car keys to your car if need be. If you don't need the keys set to the car just go to the parts dept. at your local MeBe dealer and give them your registration & your drivers license and order what you need.
I have 2 older cars (an 89 SEC and a 80 SL) and I just got an extra key for each. They are perfect (not computer controlled). I have a loaner car now and I see the key that you are talking about, they are there to help you and they want your business......schmooze and it will be in your benefit.

Jack
