Re Route R107 Exhaust pipes to right and left sides
Appreciate your advice in the possibility of Re-Routing the exhaust pipes on a R107 to the right and left side of car instead of the standard twin pipe system.
Much like the late model MB's with twin oval pipes each side . OK there would be a need to cut a slot in the body under the right side under bumper and have two mufflers . I think the engine would breath better . It makes sense that if the very late MB's have this system then the MB engineers must think it provides better performance . Is it possible to go this way , has it been done previously . Den Downunder |

I have been thinking this since I just replace my cat with a POS aftermarket cat. Since the original MB cat is $4000.00 and all direct fit aftermarkes are pure crap compared to the MB. Im thinking of making my own deep breather for my 560SL. The trick for me is figuring a way to get two O2 sensors to produce one averaged signal. I need to speak to an electronics guy about this. Once that part is solved I think there may be a Euro or Australian version of the 560SL that had a twin head pipe setup or I can get one made locally out of stainless steel. The older 450SL twin headpipes might also fit since these are also 117 engines. I belive the Euro 500SL is a 116 engine so that may not be an option.
With the twin O2 sensors and twin headpipes, I would go into 2 seperate (Big) cats on each side. Then I would bring the two pipes into a standared 450SL twin pipe center and rear muffler. Does anyone know where I can get a set of headers for the 560SL? John Roncallo |
