I have a '91 300 SL with a five speed auto trans. This vehicle seems to five terrible gas mileage! Is this normal for this particular vehicle? I also drive a '95 320E and it gives much better mileage on the highway and locally. Can anyone explain why there is such a dramatic difference?

I have no idea how many miles you can drive with one gallon of fuel...but my 300SL(-24) needs 1 liter of petrol for 6 to 9 kilometer...
The "mileage" depends on the way I use the car and therefore my average distance is 7 km on a liter of fuel. Normally I drive with a 250 Diesel and the occasional trip I make with my 300SL will be whilst enjoying the "power" of that 6 cylinder engine...

bobtaylor,
I have never actually checked the gas mileage of my SL, but I do not notice that it eats up that much gas. I do notice that the gauage will tell me the estimated miles per gallon usually hover around 25 and 29 mpg if I am going 60 mph. I am not sure how accruate that reading is though. Now that you mention it, and gets me wondering.....

1991 500sl mileage

I check my mileage regularly and rountinely experience about 14-17mpg running premium. Is this in line with what you realize on your SL? I have 55k on the odometer and it is basically stock (free-flow aircleaner),automatic, golf clubs, and a fat man driving with a large smile.

Gas mileage on '91 300 SL

Hi Bob, my '93 300 SL is currently getting about 17 MPG, with about a 30/70 mix of highway/city milage. It is still in the heart of winter so the car is warming up for aprox 5 to 10 mins every day. The car is stock with four snow tires and using Premium gas.
