Question 560Sl odometer problem

Experienced odometer failure the other day after resetting trip meter. On occaision after that it would work intermittently. I took out speedo unit and found crumbled 12 tooth drive gear. I ordered a new one and installed it and it registered 2/10ths of a mile and quit again and now does not work at all. Speedo works fine but odo and trip meters do nothing. I took unit out again and all gears look fine. Does any one know what each of the connections on the back of the speedo unit do? There is a multi pin plug and a large single pin connector.

Everything worked fine until I reset the trip meter that initially started the problem - all I have done is replaced a broken gear. Any Help would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom

That is usually what happens.

It happened to me too, after replacing the small gear it worked for a while and then stopped. I believe that if the speedo works the odo should work too because they work off the same signal. To check that, turn the small gear by hand and see if the other gears and the trip odometer move. If they don't you have another bad gear or other mechanical problem. They did not move in mine and I finally sent the odo to be fixed professionally. Hope this helps.

Do no reset meter while moving!

That is the consensus in this forum. Maybe that is what you did.

560 SL odometer

I can turn the small gear and it will increase the tenths and miles very easily - I added about two miles total while doing this - Any other thoughts. The information about the speedo signal being the same one the odo uses is helpful.

I did not want to send the unit off for repair when it might not be the speedo unit at all and maybe not getting the signal from the car somehow.

I welcome any discussion on this and appreciate your help. Thanks, Tom

I am pretty sure they use the same signal, but I am no expert so I can't say with absolute certainty, maybe somebody else can. The wiring diagrams show only the tach circuitry, I could not find any circuit for the odo. I am positive that the odo is not mechanical, meaning there is no rotating wire connecting the output shaft to the tach or odo. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Smile 560 sl odometer

Joselu43,
Who did you end up using to fix your unit? What did they say was wrong because its sounds the same as what mine is doing.

I used THEBENZSTORE in Chambliss, GA. $65 + shipping (you can look them up in the net, I talked to Ken). They fixed it inmediately and I got it back within a week. I did not ask what was wrong because mine was not moving when I rotated the small gear so it had to be one of the other gears , I asked them to replace all gears. What stumps me is that if yours works when you rotate the small gear, it has to be the driving mechanism (whatever it is) that is not working. Give them a call. Ken is very frienldy and I am sure he can tell you what's wrong.

560SL odometer

Still would like to know if anyone knows what electrical connection feeds the odometer portion of the 560SL speedometer unit without guessing - I want to know if I am getting proper odometer signal to my unit before I send a potentially good unit out for a repair it may not need. Remember this unit worked fine until trip odo was reset and then found a broken 12 tooth gear and replaced it. Speedo works fine. Any ideas or is there an MB tech in this forum that may know this.

If the speedometer is working, you are getting a signal. I believe it is the round connector at the center of the unit.

Where did you get the gear from? Part #? Do you have the speedo #?

Reset my tripometer and had the same thing happen. Quit working altogether. Reset it a couple of times more, started working again. Do not touch it now.

I have a spare 12 tooth nylon odo gear with brass sleeve I bought a couple months, bought one too many. I'll take $20 PayPal for it shipped.
