560SL Certer Console Wood Removal?

Gentelmen

I have done everything the CD says to remove the wood from my center console, but I cant seem to disengage the back part of the wood. See attached photo to see where I'm at. According to the CD it should just need to be removed aft. Any help is appriciated.

I happen to be working on it right now

Slide the wood piece towards the rear of the car and a pin will disengage at the back of the wood piece, near the carpet in the tray area. If you pull straight up, you will break the plastic pin. Mine did a long time ago and I replaced it with a screw. To completely remove the wood piece, you'll need to remove the harness from the two window controls, the mirror control and the hazzard light. The hazzard light connector has some small plastic tabs that you have to bend out to remove the wire harness, a total PITA. As with everything on this car, patience is a virtue.

Well thats what the CD said. I'v been trying to slide it backwards. I even tried forward and sideward and straight up. It just wont release. I guess I will work it a little more. It probably been installed for 18 years.

Thank You

I got it. After much pain. It apears that the mirror switch has to be removed before you slide it back. This means removing it from the top. Which in my case meant a small chip in the venear.

Arg, that sucks

But good job. You know, a while ago my mirror switch had a problem where everytime it got pushed up, it would short and blow the fuse, which is the same one as the horn. I was particularly proud of troubleshooting that one.

Anyway, a new one was like twenty bucks, so I took the switch apart and just removed the metal clip that was shorting. Well, that metal clip is one of the two that hold it to the wood surround. So my switch is a little loose, but the harness is so tight, it stays in place. The result is that I can remove the wood surround fairly easily now. I guess I forgot about that. These cars are like a puzzle.

My favorite fix is when I noticed a rattle in the passenger seat. I took off the back cover and one of the wires was rattling around, I can't remember if it was the back release, or the angle adjust or something elese. But it was rattling enough to annoy the crap out of me. So I wedged a plastic putty knife behind it, a used one at that. Those things are like 49 cents and it worked like a charm. I always wonder what someone wood think if they ever took the seat appart.

Good luck in whatever your ultimate task was. David.

The ultimate task is to remove the dashboard and replace the center vent vacume servo. a $45.00 part in a $2000.00 location. It should be fun. I wish I could afford a new dash board while I got it off.

Good luck on a horrendous job...do you know for certain that this one is bad (with a vacuum pump, for example?). My problem was the "double pod" defroster flap, where the rubber simply disntegrated from moisture. Difficult to repair, but complete disassembly was not required, and the others were OK.

Yes thats the one. All of them checked out fine with the pump except the one in the million dollar location. While I'm ther Im replacing all 3 of the difficult ones. Center vent, Defrost and leg flaps. The 4 fresh air ones can be done without removing the dash. The defrost can also be done with the dash in place but I's alot easier with it off.
