R129 Aftermarket Cruise Control

OK, I give up. I am sick and tired of dealing with the tempermental thing. I am considering installing an aftermarket CC package from Rostra. Has anyone tried this on an R129? I know it is possible to hook up the OEM control stem and thus preserve the interior originality. The Rostra unit will also take the VSS (speed signal) from the car or you can put a new one on the drive shaft. The second option is not the way I want to go. Do any of you know what the speed signal frequency is (18,000ppm??) and if it is a sign wave or pulse?

I am looking forward to a reliable and trouble free CC in my near future!!!

Come on, folks. You can admit it. You have at least thought about it!

What problems are you having? Mine works flawlessly, knock on wood!

It does not engage at all. All fault codes ($190.00 to read) supposedly point to a bad actuator (servo). The servo is unique to my year (1992) and as you would expect, $$$$$$$$$$$$$, and no one seems to have a spare or used one. P/N 000 545 3165. I don't wnat to buy one as a troubleshooting tool only to find out it is something else.

Just have yours rebuilt:

Or, Silver Star Recycling (1-800-783-4911) claims to have a used one from a 1992 500SL.

Peter, from General Development, and I are on a first name basis already. Of all the units he does rebuild, mine is not one of them and will not be in the near future. Thanks for the info anyway.

Have you checked with Beckmann Technology in NC?

Is it possible to upgrade the unit to a 1993 or later unit.

I just sent them an email, Len. Thanks for the suggestion.

How about the used on that Silver Star Recycling (1-800-783-4911) has from a 1992 500SL?

Mike Miller 09-25-2006 04:42 PM

I called them today. $550.00 for a used, not tested unit. I sure makes me a little nervous.

gsxr 09-25-2006 06:25 PM

I'd see if they'll come down on the price a little. If not, they do have a warranty, but see if it's a refund or exchange for electrical items. If it's an exchange, make sure they have more than one, lol... still better than $1300 (wholesale) for a new one.
