Got a new car (pix)

ok, it's not new. Well, it's new to us at least...
(not my photos; from the eBay listing)
1988 560SL ... high milage, but still under 100K @ the moment.

...sending the bank check tomorrow, and will hopefully be up here next week!
Never thought I'd be posting in this forum years ago.

I don't consider 100K "high-mileage" on this car. My next purchase will be of a higher-mileage southern car at a better price than I paid for this one, leaving me a lot more headroom to work with.

With the motor mounts, subframe mounts (f/r), shocks and steering attended to and the rubber seals replaced, my 94K mi car feels very tight. It's my goal to keep it so!

Good luck, I hope you keep it until they take the keys away.

yeah, looks very nice.

the condition of the front license bracket indicates a very clean car i would think. it is the first thing to rust on a benz.

Exclamation Nice PANZERWAGEN

Aren't those the first year the 3rd brake light was integrated into the trunk?
Neat color too. Gentle and subtle. Not EVERY one has to be SCHWARTZ or SIGNAL ROT.

Got a hardtop too? Hardtop hoist? Whats the condition of the rear window on the soft top?

Might want to think about a new timing chain, tensioners and guide rail after 100,000 miles. Its still a baby at 94k. Nicest thing about these is that most of em led pampered lives, cruising between the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Palm Springs Tennis CLub, Scarsdale, the Hamptons and West Palm Beach.

Seldom seen in Omaha

A fashion accessory like a Tennis bracelet.

Good catch! Congrats, enjoy!!

With these cars, we start talking "high mileage" at 250K.

And they may be seldom seen in Omaha, but around here I see 3 or 4 every day...different ones, too!

Have fun with your ride. These cars are very special...a different experience from modern cars!

Very good condition!!!

I like that color too. That is a very good example of an SL in its prime. Shes not even broken in yet...

Thanx everyone for the kind words. I'm getting a lot of reassurance from everyone on the milage. That's incredible to hear. I'll be scheduling to have the timing guides and maybe chain done right away, et al (thanx strife, jim b.). The way my mechanic was talking, he may even talk me into a head job. I dunno tho. What you think? (you have to realize, the 5.4L AMG engine he put in my car had some water damage so was completely opened up top and bottom, and heads were done; didn't take the pistons off the crank but everything else was taken apart and put back together. I have the utmost trust in him)

Hardtop yes.

Hardtop stand or hoist? no unfortunately... I have to look into buying one right away. I knew about hoists for Jeep hardtops but I didn't think of it for the SL for some reason. I wonder if a Jeep's hoist has the same relative geometry and would work (being cheap; thinking the Jeep hoist would be cheaper).

I've heard that color named for the exterior, but never for the interior color. I thought it was officially called 'Pebble'. But 'Mushroom' ?... I like it.

Thanx again for the welcome.

( one thing ... what's "SIGNAL ROT"? )

Performance Products has the mechanical hoist. When I bought it, I think it was about $180.

Also, many of the people here have more miles on their engine, and they havent had it apart - yet. I dont spend money like that unless I have to. I would reccomend just testing all of the operating paramaters and go from there.

Thanx Justin on both items. Ya, I'm not apt to have this engine touched (though me being me, would love to raise compression above 10:1 and put a cam in it ... but no.... stop that! ...stop it now! )
